Eucharistic Adoration question

Hi,

I have a question about Eucharistic Adoration. Is that the same as Eucharistic Hour? The parish calendar lists two weekly events, but I’m not sure if they’re the same thing, other than the fact that Eucharistic Adoration lasts 4 hours on Thursday.

Also, is it only when the Host is present in the monstrance? If Jesus is present in the Tabernacle (lamp lighted), can we pray as though He were present in the monstrance on the altar?

I’m just curious why there’s a special ceremony when He is always in the Tabernacle.

I ask because I work next to a hospital and there’s a hospital chapel with a Tabernacle (although there’s no lamp I can see). Just wondering if I can pray there, since it’s convenient and all…

**You can, and you should. The thing about Adoration is that people are there specifically to be with the Lord, and there must always be somebody there, since he is exposed. During Adoration it’s normal to expect strict silence. In the church, people come in and out, and some folks find it distracting. **

**It’ s a special effort, yes. There are special prayers (the Divine Praises, special hymns sung (O Salutaris, and Tantum Ergo), and incense. It’s a distinct thing from simply praying in the church. **

**You can pray there. Patricularly for the patients, that would be really nice. Maybe the candle simply went out. **

You can do whichever is convenient for you.

When I was not able to make it to Adoration, I would go to church early before Mass started, and would spend time praying in the pew, before Our Lord in the tabernacle.

When we spend time with Jesus in Adoration, we are acknowledging His Real Presence in the Eucharist. We are praising Him for being present to us.

When Jesus is present in the tabernacle there is a special candle or light lit so you can sit in adoration and be with Jesus, pray to Jesus, and feel His presence. If you want to stay with Jesus an hour, that would be a holy hour. Now parishes also have a special time where they have adoration where the faithful come and special prayers are prayed with Jesus, led by a Priest or Deacon at the beginning when they bring Jesus in and the end of that holy hour of adoration as a group. At our parish during that hour the Jesus is placed in a monstrance and we lift our hearts up to Him in prayer. We have that hour once a month but may go to more hours. Perpetual adoration is when there are adorers with Jesus around the clock, usually at least two at a time for hour shifts, praying and adoring every day. I hope that explains this some.

I don’t know if your church has perpetual adoration which is a special chapel with Adoration 24 hours or if they have a special Adoration hour weekly. If they have perpetual adoration I would recommend making a commitment to a convenient weekly hour if your schedule permits.
When I was a new convert spending time with Jesus in Adoration helped my faith increase and helped me grow closer to Jesus.
