Can I have some arguments against euthanasia please?

Thanks everyone!

What??? Does any thing about the Nazi’s treatment of the mentally ill and handicapped sound like an endorsement?

lol well I have a friend who is very pro-euthanasia 😦 I need some secular and religious arguments against it.

At the moment I have said that only God has the right to take life…

And the 10 Commandments don’t help to cover this?

How about dousing the gent with some holy water when he is not looking???

LOL I feel like that alot…he thinks it is “cruel to let terminally ill people suffer and die without dignity.”

You might find some ideas here life.org.nz/euthanasia.htm

This website is designed to look at all sides of the issue of euthanasia and end-of-life issues without being judgmental. It is helpful in exposing some of the fallacies and falsehoods about euthanasia.

You will see that the Navigation Bar of the LHS has second level links in blue. Most of them also have third level links if you click on them. The Site Map could be useful to help you find what you are looking for because the whole website is roughly 1000 pages

I was the Project Manager for developing most of it and researched and wrote most of the Euthanasia section (it covers Suicide, Abortion & Euthanasia)

So do I.

Fortunately many doctors are now realising that they are not well trained in pain relief and palliative care and are more open to refering to those who are. Try this page…
life.org.nz/euthanasiamedicalkeyissuespainrelief.htm
and this…life.org.nz/euthanasiamedicalkeyissuespalliativecare.htm

I have worked in Palliative Care with Hospice, and am currently working at a Geriatric Hospital as I research more on this.

**Ten Reasons Why Voluntary Euthanasia Should Not Be Legalised ** was written by a Professor of Geriatric Medicine when New Zealand was looking at legalising assisted suicide. Most of it could be applicable outside of NZ. He has also taught courses in Bioethics and published several papers on aspects of Medical Ethics. life.org.nz/euthanasia2.htm

I think a good argument against Euthanasia from a Catholic perspective is that everyone needs to be purified in order to get into Heaven. If one ends someone’s suffering early, they aren’t doing them a favor since if it was necessary for them to endure some sort of purification in order to get into Heaven, and that purgatory on earth while still alive was cut short, than they will have to finish it in Purgatory and I am assuming that one would be lucky enough to be purified on earth while still alive even if it means suffering.

My 86 year old mother has been going down hill since August. She is on hospice and would like to give up. She has taken out her oxygen tube and refused her meds more than once… She has threatened to not eat or drink. She lasted five hours on her last threat. I understand her pain and exhaustion. Where does she cross the line into suicide(self euthanasia?). Can she refuse oxygen and meds but not food and water? I would like to support her in her wishes as long as I am doing the right thing. She is so tired of living like this. She wants to know"how does one die?"

Peace be with you!

This sounds like you’re talking about assisted suicide. Euthanasia is when people are simply killed, like old people in the Netherlands. I think euthanasia is much easier to argue against than assisted suicide. Euthanasia is murder and there is no other way around the issue than to call it that. Assisted suicide, on the other hand, is a harder issue to argue against with someone who is not religious.

My main argument would be this: killing is wrong, regardless of who it is that is killed (of course, the exception would be self-defense, but that is beside the point). Even if someone wants to die, why should someone help them to do it? Living with severe depression can be every bit as painful as living with a terminal illness, and many of those people would probably want to die more than terminally ill patients. Should doctors be able to prescribe them lethal doses of barbituates to help them commit suicide?

In Christ,
Rand
