Evangelical: What does it mean? What's the discipline?etc.

Hello All,
I’m a catachumen in the catholic faith and I really enjoy it. I was speaking with a family member and he discussed how a good portion of my family were evangelicals ie grandparents etc. Now I have no desire to leave the faith I’m in, I love the Maronite catholic identity. However, I was wondering if some here wouldn’t mind enlightening me on what it is to be an evangelical christian? From what I gather, different groups go by that title some being Methodists, Anglicans, etc. So I’d like to here about the various tenents, etc. All responses appreciated.

Go to www.salvationhistory.com and get the Scott Hahn conversion CD. Mr. Hahn was an evangelical who at the age of 26 was offered the postion of “Dean” at an evangelical college, because of his knowledge and skills in explaining the evangelical faith. His conversion CD will help explain a lot of your inquiries.

Jon, I am located in the US. Now you’ve piqued my curiosity. Why do you want to know? Are there different flavors of Evangelical in different locals?

If you are going to bring up Hahn, realize that the Reform Presbyterian types are not exactly what I think of when we talk about evangelicals. They are Calvinists. There are some who consider those groups…not the same

An Evangelical in the US is by definition different from the UK. What books or other materials have you read so far on the topic?

There are Evangelicals in ALL faiths, including the Catholic Church. Bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to others is the only requirement. In fact, we are all called as Christians, no matter the denomination to bring Christ to others.
