I thought of the following some months ago, but with preoccupation with school (college), and being a double major, I didn’t have time to start on the project. Now that I have free time on my hands, I can. However, I figured I would ask for (name removed by moderator)ut. Constructive criticism is welcome. But moral support would be nice to 🙂

As part of the New Evangelization, I would like to create a Catholic version of the fortune cookie. I would not call it a fortune cookie, but either a Holy Cookie or Virtue Cookie. It would not necessarily be shaped like a fortune cookie (though the recipe would be the same). I might decide on a distinctive design, though still small. Instead of the little slip inside containing a fortune, it would contain a quote from a saint !!

My idea is to make these, and introduce them first to say, a Catholic bookstore, and ask the owner or manager if they would be willing to give these out to customers (free of charge) as a little gift with their purchase. Then, hopefully, word of mouth would spread about the cookies.

What do you think?

I think it’s a fabulous idea and I vote for the name of Virtue Cookie. I think it speaks more to the intent of what you are doing and “Holy Cookie” might dissuade non Catholics from choosing to buy one.

Good luck with your endeavor if you see it to fruition.

Mary.

Go for it, I would not refuse a cookie. I vote for Virtue Cookie as name as well. Are you taking suggestions for quotes or is that a topic for another thread?

Sorry, I just thought of this now: you can try dying the cookies or frost them or get paper that matches the color of the liturgical season. I just thought it would be cute, I find baked goods adorable. Just don’t make them too cute to eat :).

I think that’s a great idea! I will experiment with what is most cost-efficient (e.g the paper idea), but if I can get some of my friend on board I am sure we can get a little more elaborate.

Another way I might indicate the liturgical season is if I wrapped each cookie in a small plastic candy bag (I can find them in all kinds of sizes at a place like Michael’s or other arts and crafts store that have a baking/decoration section) and tie each with a ribbon that matches the color of the liturgical season.

This is such a great idea!! I would love to hand out those cookies in my RCIA class when we talk about the Saints! And the idea about wrapping the cookies in little bags with ribbons that match the liturgical season is genius. Good luck in this endeavor. 👍

IF you’re feeling like the cookie aspect is a lot of work - Out local Fortune Cookie company can put custom slips of paper in. Winds up being about $.20 a cookie in bulk:

How about a cookie shaped like a host? Maybe to close to the real thing. How about the shape of a cross? coating on top the color of the liturgical season. 😛

I’m sorry but the thread title immediately made me think of the Jack Chick tract “The Death Cookie.” Blasphemers have, more than once, referred to the Blessed Sacrament as a cracker or cookie. Definitely do not use a circular shape.

Incidentally, have you seen Scripture Cookies? It’s basically the same idea as what you describe, but with verses from a Protestant Bible.
