Evangelizing a Celebrity?

Hello. This may be an odd question, but I have recently had the desire to evangelize Catholicism to a celebrity: Chuck Norris. I have been a big fan of his all my life, not just for the excitement of his movies but for the positive moral and example he provides, especially in his show Walker, Texas Ranger. Also, I have been reading his autobiography and he shows many signs of a Catholic faith. In his younger days, he visited the Vatican and descried it as a sacred shrine; he disapproves of abortion, premarital and extramarital sex, cohabitation, pornography, etc.; he believes in the necessity of authority, leadership and good examples; and he believes in both heroism and humility. He values the family, and has a strong love of the Bible. To me, this seems like fertile soil for the Catholic seed.

But, is this desire proper? Is it even conceivable that someone who is just a fan of a well-known celebrity, who has been Protestant his entire life, could somehow contact him and evangelize the Catholic faith to him? If so, does anyone know how I could go about that? I tried to find his contact information but I couldn’t seem to find anything. Thank you all for your help and God bless. 🙂

I don’t know why the desire for someone’s conversion would be improper in any way–rather, it represents a response to Our Lord’s call to make disciples of all nations. However you feel you can accomplish this, maybe it’d be a noble endeavor. At the very least, pray for him–we often forget that celebrities are real people (which makes it easier to bash the more notorious of public sinners, since it helps us forget that we too are sinners), and thus need grace just as much as anyone else, and probably more. So pray for him and any other favorite actors and musicians or other “personalities” you might know of. Who knows? You may never know it until the next life, but how much fruit do prayers made out of love for another bear in the souls of the ones for whom we pray?

I think it would be tough to do, but not impossible, I suppose. You’re not likely to get anywhere by mailing a Catholic pamphlet to his fan club mailing address. Thought, again, anything is possible.

If you ever had the chance to meet him in person, then things might be different. But even then, one would likely have to establish some sort of friendship. Unless the Holy Spirit gave you just the right words to say in order to catch his attention with a single phrase and encourage him to pursue that path.

It’s certainly a noble desire to want to evangelize and spread the Gospel, but I also would urge caution about getting too wrapped up in the idea of evangelizing some distant celebrity and ignoring the people that God puts right next to us in our daily lives. That’s where we’re much more likely to be effective evangelists.

Thank you all for your advice, I greatly appreciate it. It saddens me that there are so many people, many of whom are quite admirable, who are ignorant of the Faith or at least confused about it, and we often cannot help them beyond prayers. However, it is ultimately their choice and it is between them and God, and so our intercessory prayers are very valuable and worthwhile. As Blessed Mother Theresa said, we also intercede for those who do not pray for themselves. Also, I focus very much on converting those near me. I just felt a great admiration for Chuck Norris and felt the desire to showing him the fulfillment of his virtuous beliefs in Catholicism, just as I would anyone else. Again thank you all and God bless. 🙂

If it were me, I would immediately start a very strong prayer campaign for his conversion. The power of prayer is an amazing thing. Mention him specifically, find some prayers for conversion, or write your own heartfelt prayer on his behalf. Your may never know the results, but God will hear your prayer. You can pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, also.

Excellent advice! Thank you very much. Would you recommend doing that prayer campaign here, perhaps in the Prayer Intentions forum?
