Is there any Catholic effort underway currently to evangelize the Muslim world?

I have been unable to find many official catholic writings on Islam and it seems like from what I have heard that they tend to discourage evangelizing them. Even the Vatican’s writings about Turkey’s inclusing into the EU indicate that they’d rather that part of the world just be separated and continue its own traditions in isolation from western influence. I’m not quite sure what was meant by that. Were they asserting that Islam’s teachings are equal to Christianity? I could be misreading it, but I haven’t seen the type of zeal for winning those souls that I have seen for converting protestants.

I know that it would not be an easy task and the church as a whole has many other pressing issues, but I think with the increasing violence and militancy of that religion there seems to be an urgent need for Christ. The Protestants probably thought it would be impossible to convert Latin American catholics, but they seem to have been very successful.

Major Bump.

Since I was on the Catholic Knight blog and and stumbled across this video, I have been thinking all week about how we must evangelize the Muslim people (as well as Protestants and seriously re-catechize lukewarm Catholics).

We don’t have a choice. Europe is not reproducing and Secularism is reigning hard there and here in North America. It is shocking to me that churches have been abandoned and converted into mosques.

Today I just received a bevy of apologist materials (I strongly suggest everyone go to this site’s shop and get some). I am wondering if there are any efforts underway to specifically introduce Catholicism to our Muslim neighbors.

Admittedly it is a tricky problem. Muslims do worship God, but the faith is mixed with untruths making it potentially dangerous. Indeed, they look at the West and see a lot of immoral people who root on war after war and bow to Secularism (this is not entirely accurate, but I understand how they can adopt this as a blanket view of us).

From what I have read, Bishop Sheen spoke about the likelihood of Islam making huge gains. Father Corapi has written that Our Lady is the key to bringing those in Islam to the one true Faith. In a strange twist of history, Muslims respect Mary more than most Protestants!

Personally, I like St. Peter’s without minarets.

Sadly, evangelizing can be extremely dangerous in Muslim areas. I’m not sure what the window of time is for Europe, but I can’t imagine it is more than 10 years unless things dramatically change.

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance and ma God’s love descend on all of us!

I have a blog I’ve just started that is intended to help Catholics evangelize Muslims on a one-to-one basis. The link is in my signature. I’m in contact with a very helpful Anglican missionary in the Middle East who has been very encouraging and helpful to me. He recommended a Catholic mission group called Kergyma Teams that sometimes does mission trips to the Middle East. Another help, though not specifically Catholic, is St. Francis Magazine, a magazine for Christian missionaries sharing Christ with Muslims. I’d be very excited to know if anyone has any other Catholic resources or knows of any Catholic lay mission groups.

kindly forward me materials on evangelisation and kerygma
Here’s the website of Kergyma Teams. It doesn’t look like they’re doing any trips to the Muslim world right now, but keep an eye on it anyway because they probably will eventually. Here’s my blog which I created to equip Catholics to evangelize Muslims. I mostly talk about one-on-one evangelization you can do without leaving the West.

Hey everyone. I have been trying to evangelize a Muslim friend of mine today. Well, I am wanting to know of some good books that I can send him. Also, what is a good Bible that I could mail to him? He lives in either India or Pakistan but I would gladly pay the price to ship them to him. Could you please provide me a list of books, Bibles, pamphlets, or tracts that I can send to him? Also, a list of some good websites that I could send to him would also be appreciated as we are going to have correspondence via e-mail.

I’ve never tried to evangelize a muslim but here’s, I think, an excellent opener: Talk to them about Our Lady of Fatima. The only 2 women in the Koran (as I undertand it) that are well thought of is Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and Fatima, the favorite daughter of Mohammed. Bishop Sheen prophecied that one day the Muslims will convert to Catholicism through Our Lady of Fatima. I’ve heard that many Muslims are making pilgrimages to Fatima. Read this short essay: ewtn.com/library/mary/olislam.htm This is fascinating!!!

Just tell him to read the entire Koran and see how contradictory and evil it is.

It was created 500 or so years after Christ, by a man who claimed he was visited by an angel in a cave who told him to re-write the bible.

Tell him to watch this docco: youtube.com/watch?v=mjq5Vi9Gc68

Don’t link him to any Catholic forums. I’ve found them to be full of absolutely dreadful anti-Muslim hate and rhetoric.

Anti-Muslim hate and rhetoric?

If you’re a Christian within an Islamic ruled country, be prepared to be beaten/killed/jailed and discriminated against, yet you mention anti-muslim hate and rhetoric on Catholic websites? Lord forbid.

Maybe you should evaluate the situation at hand.

Catholic forums are not full of anti-Muslim hate and rhetoric. Sure, some Catholics on such message boards may espouse hateful views towards Muslims but certainly all do not and neither do most.

Why was my thread merged with this one? I’d rather it be it’s own thread so that way my specific request can get more attention. If anyone knows of any resources that I can give to a Muslim or any links for Muslims, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Hi Holly, my blog might be of some help to you–I have collected lots of links and resources. As far as resources go, the Evangelical Protestant organization Crescent Project has an outreach pack that you can buy for $15 and send to your friend. It includes the book *Adha in the Injeel *(i.e., sacrifice in the Gospels), the Jesus Film with 16 language tracks (including Punjab and Urdu which would probably be the langauges your friend knows), and the book *Is the Injeel Corrupted? *Unfortunately the DVD is formatted for North American use, and I don’t know if your friend has access to a DVD player that would play it.

As far as Bibles go, on the “Bible & Catechism” page of my blog I have a list of audio and online Bibles in many different languages, including the language(s) that your friend probably speaks. If you ask him which language he most commonly speaks and reads, then I could find you a print copy of the New Testament in that language. 🙂

Converting Muslims has to start with Mary. They respect her so much to the point of devotion (not to the degree of Catholic devotion but still). Mary brought Jesus Christ to our world as His Mother. She will bring Christ to their world if they ask (including our intercessions). They even respect Catholic devotions to Our Blessed Mother in Muslim countries. We believe that anyone who asks Mary to bring him/her closer to God, she will do that for them. You may be interested to look at the history of Fatima before the earliest event surrounding the apparition. Anyway, this can be the way to start.
A book that you will find helpful with this is:

“The World’s First Love: Mary, Mother of God” by Fulton Sheen

I hope this helps.

Hello!

I have a Muslim boyfriend and he is gradually becoming more accepting of Christianity. It is happening very slowly, but here is what has happened. Sorry, it’s all 'I, I, I," but it’s supposed to be a testimony with ideas for you:

Firstly, I completely agree with those mentioned Fatima. I watched The 13th Day (a film about Our Lady of Fatima) and my Muslim boyfriend believed it, saying, “how can people still reject God after that?”

After that, I explained to him that there have been other apparitions from Mary, with accompanying miracles. After watching The 13th Day and explaining the strict conditions in order for an apparition/miracle to be accepted, he believes the others could be true (although I’ve only explained Lourdes to him).

He even almost carried a green scapular in his wallet when I asked if he would, until he found out it has a picture of Mary on it (He didn’t feel comfortable with an image). I am making him a cushion for Christmas and will tuck the scapular into the stuffing instead.

During Ramadam, he read the entire Qu 'ran and I said it would be interesting if he was able to compare the Bible and Qu 'ran. He said he will read the Bible :). I will give it to him after I have read it myself though, as I don’t want to be too pushy.

The Catholic church stand is Muslims are naturally saved already. Like the jews. Pls see CCC841. If they are saved already and if you truly believe it, why do you need to evangelize to a ‘Saved’ soul?

841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. “The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.”

Because of CCC845
**845 **To reunite all his children, scattered and led astray by sin, the Father willed to call the whole of humanity together into his Son’s Church. The Church is the place where humanity must rediscover its unity and salvation. The Church is “the world reconciled.” She is that bark which “in the full sail of the Lord’s cross, by the breath of the Holy Spirit, navigates safely in this world.” According to another image dear to the Church Fathers, she is prefigured by Noah’s ark, which alone saves from the flood.334
Here’s a blog by a Christian in the Middle East that looks like it might have some useful stuff: islamdom.blogspot.com/

The Catherine of Siena Institute’s Intentional Disciples Blog posts articles on witnessing to Muslims every now and then. Here are a couple:

Why Muslims Become Christians
How Catholics Could Help Muslims Who Are Seeking Christ

There are lots of related articles on Islam and Muslims in their archives if you do a search.
