Evangelizing with st. Patrick.
In American culture it is still common to wish people a happy Saint Patrick’s Day.
Then I will ask them if they ever studied the history of Saint Patrick. And in almost every case they will say no.
One Catholic friend of mine asked you mean St Patrick’s Day is named after a real historical person?
Especially to African Americans I point out that st-patrick himself used to be a slave as a young boy in Ireland. He escaped to England and gained his freedom. He grew up and became a Catholic bishop. Then he went back to Ireland to evangelize the good news.
By the Holy Spirit working through him he was able to bring about the conversion of The Druids into Christianity. And to give up their slaves.
It is interesting that there are no black Irishman. This is because they didn’t believe in slavery so they never imported African slaves into their country.
Sometimes people will say that they do not celebrate st. Patrick’s Day so I asked them what do they celebrate what do they believe in.
One young lady said Jesus Christ. And so I asked do you believe Jesus when he said he is the True Vine and that apart from him we can do nothing. And it is only through him we can do good. The Holy Spirit working in US enables us to do good works. And it was Jesus working through Saint Patrick that brought about The Druids conversion into Christianity.
I want to celebrate ALL the good that Jesus Does both the good He does directly as well as the good He does indirectly through us when we operate with his grace working within us.
happy Saint Patrick’s Day tomorrow. March 17th
