At my parish, the confirmation class is being required to attend a presentation by a imam from the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City. He and another presenter are going to have a discussion on the Islamic Faith. Opinions? Should the kids be required to go to this? Is this a good idea while these kids are still being formed in their catholic faith?

Why on earth would they require that? That’s just plain weird. Is this presentation at the church or the Islamic Center? Either way, it’s not a good idea to attend. While it’s always good to know what other faiths believe, this presentation sounds like indoctrination. There’s no way the Imam is going to tell the kids that his religion is wrong, which in fact, it is. We need to be converting them, not they converting us.

The presentation is in the parish hall/ religious education building next door.

A few years ago our Diocese did a day of Catholic/Islam conversation. It was a very nice day.

I, for my part, am not attending the presentation despite the fact I’ll miss free food if I don’t go. I’m a volunteer student teacher for the confirmation classes but I have no say in planning things like that. I don’t agree with it, but I would be the same way if a Hindu or Flying Spaghetti Monster or anyone from any other sort of religion came to speak.
