There are very few horror movies that genuinely scare me (Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street had little or no effect). But I couldn’t sleep after watching this.

It’s a refreshing departure from the “Oh no! don’t go in there! The killer’s waiting for you!!!” brand of horror movie that has sadly become too common these days.

I heard there is an unrated cut available. I don’t suppose Netflix makes that available?

Edit: From the Wiki article on the film –
Anderson said that his initial cut of the film, before the visual effects had been completed, ran to about 130 minutes in length. The film was even more graphic in this incarnation, and both test audiences and the studio were unnerved by the gore. Paramount ordered Anderson to cut the film by thirty minutes and delete some of the violence, a decision that he regrets. Some of the lost scenes were offered as special features on the 2006 DVD but were taken from poor quality video tape, the only format in which the scenes now exist; the studio had little interest in keeping unused footage and the film has since been lost.[3]

The original 130 minute cut including all the missing footage was reportedly found on a single VHS tape by producer Lloyd Levin as announced in an interview by Paul W.S. Anderson when he was at ComicCon 2012.[4]

I watched the movie again to see if it would be scary the second time around. It wasn’t as scary, but it still got to me.

By far, what creeps me out the most is the scene where the characters access the “ships log”. You see what happened to the previous crew in the alternate dimension (aka hell). Very scary stuff. I don’t know how they shot this scene.

Trust me, I am not into gore. I don’t watch “Saw” or “Friday the 13th”. Those movies are just gross.

This depiction of hell is very interesting. There are no “burning bonfires” or devils prodding people with pitchforks. Everybody has simply gone insane, and become ultra-sadistic towards each other. The misery of Hell is depicted as something that the people are inflicting *on themselves. *.

That’s interesting because if I had to describe Hell, it would be the one place where God- and therefore Goodness-is absent. Without good there is only pure unadulterated evil. In a place where there is only pure evil, the dwellers will more than likely do nothing other than inflict pain and suffering on one another, our of despair, anger, hatred and malice… And that thought scares me far more than fire and brimstone.

But that’s just my theory of Hell.

That is just gym class for many of us…
 
The problem with event horizon is that it defies the laws of physics in so many ways it becomes unwatchable.

But stopping to reload the weapon is boring.
People will believe that clip holds 9 bazillion rounds if it keeps them entertained.

If a movie actually followed real science, the audience would not be distracted from the lack of story. The writers would have to depend on writing good characters and a good plot. They would actually have to write.

I’m a science fiction and horror buff. I agree with Jharek (who, wow!, mentioned Harlan Ellison!), but I did enjoy the film and it actually gave me nightmares.
