Rom 14:11

For it is written: *As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me: and every tongue shall confess to God.

Phil: 2:10

10 *That in the name of Jesus, **every knee should bow **of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.

Regarding the expression “every knee shall bow” is that a mistranslation?
You can bow your head and body but how on earth does your knee bow?
Surely your knee bends and not bows?

A human technicality.

The knees bend, but their owner bows “at” the knees.

To bow is simply to lower one’s form by a bending motion. In English, the part that does not actually bend is said to bow: the neck bends, the head bows; the waist bends, the body bows. But we are also said to bow at the neck or the waist. We’d also bow at the knees.

ISTM that “knees bowing” is simply a rough translation. I’ll see what the Greek says.

The phrase “every knee shall bow” is an idiom (like “it’s raining cats and dogs”). I’ve always taken this particular idiom as meaning kneeling.

The ones that are UNDER the Earth are in Purgatory.
I don’t see this as a reference to purgatory, under the earth is always used to mean Hell. It means everyone including the demons and the damned are subject to Christ and they are not immune to His dominion which is shown a lot in the gospels when Jesus casts out demons and they sometimes cry back to him to relent or ask him for permission to do certain things like when they asked to be sent into the herd of pigs and Jesus obliged.

Demons and people in Hell do not bow to anyone–they respect no one except themselves–they hate God they will never bow before him…

People in purgatory do bow–they love and respect God…

I recall an old legend that the devil’s knees bend back rather than forward; so they cannot kneel.
