I was learning about freedom in my moral theology class the other day and this came to my mind: freedom of silence. We live in a world today where freedom is seen more as “I can do what I want.” or “We have the freedom of speech, I can say whatever I want whether it’s hurtful or not.” However, that also includes having the freedom not to do anything, to be silent. There is a lot of evil going on in the world today, and there are many people complaining or not wanting to know about it, and they are doing nothing. Like the famous quote goes: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Do not allow evil to triumph. Do not do sit by and do nothing.”

Are there any Church documents or encyclicals, etc. that relate to this topic?

I believe that if we trust Pope Francis he will lead us in the direction of LOVE and destruction of evil! Silence can be a great virtue if used wisely.

The Church, in the past few years, has been talking a lot about how we need to reject indifference to world events, and that we need to help our brothers and sisters and fight against injustice. If you want a specific message from the papacy, Pope Francis recently warned against the “globalization of indifference”. Here’s the link below:

I definitely agree that too many people are distracting themselves from the big problems of the world. Indifference is like a drug thats blinding the minds of the people from reality. Karl Marx was wrong: religion isn’t the opium of the masses; indifference is. Freedom of speech is a right we should all cherish, but it’s used more often for people to say stupid things than to stand up to injustice. I’m glad that you are among the few that have realized this.

Dear TheresaAdrianna,

I was reading your posts. As Student in a Catholic College, you are blessed. I do hope that you were able to find a topic for your research paper in your Moral Theology Class. The Semester is ending . . . Hope you were able to discern what to research!

Prayer to the Holy Spirit is very important for daily life whether it is in choosing a topic for a research paper, or for discerning one’s path/vocation in life, or just simply living day by day in an increasingly disturbing world!.

I’m saying a prayer for you, that you find “inner peace” in whateverr you choose to do or be in your life.

Be patient, and Trust that God’s Grace is with you each day wherever you are!

Shestelle
