OK, now that we agree on something, let’s talk about AIDS and the efficacy of condoms as a prophylactic.

Condoms work well to prevent unwanted pregnancies and very well as a prophylactic against STDs. The church’s teaching on condoms is, in my view, misguided, immoral, uncharitable and plain wrong…and is, in my opinion, based on a deeply disordered view of human sexuality.
Do your research. The only successful programs to stem the tide of Aids in africa has been abstinence based. Condoms reinforce the idea that fornication is a-ok; hence, the disease gets the opportunity to spread.

Well I am sorry, Michael, but this is rank propaganda. I am anxious that you don’t interpet this as an attack, but I don’t know how else to categorise this link other than as dishonest - I know that you are too honourable to support the idea that one can lie one’s way into heaven. I am angry about the link you posted because it has the potential to change behaviours in a way that is very damaging to people, based on misinformation.

For example, Cardinal Trujillo (a man for whom I have nothing but contempt), kept repeating the lie, rejected by all authorities, that condoms allow the passage of the AIDS virus.I needn’t tell you what damage that erroneous claim caused to humanity and how many deaths lie at his door because of it.

Major world organisations agree that condoms are an important weapon in fighting AIDS: World Health Organisation; Federal Drugs Administration; Department of Health (USA); Ministry of Health (UK); National Institutes for Health; Centers for Disease Control; Christian Aid; the list goes on.

Turning now to Uganda, the facts are that AIDS possibly started in the country so it has been infected longer than every other country. The government took an extremely enlightened position on AIDS, and with the endoresement of the president, the support of many grass roots bodies, and a programme of education and prophylaxis, Uganda has, uniquely amongst African states appeared to reduce the prevalence of HIV (through mortality and reduced incidence)

Most of the reduction in prevalence was achieved in the 1990s and early 2000s through the ABC programme (abstinence, be faithful, use condoms). Condoms were a key element of this strategy. It is only since 2004 that abstinence-only (de-emphasisng, potentially disastrously, the proven elements of ‘be faithful’, and ‘use condoms’) programmes have been promoted. If the ineffective results of the US research on abstinence-only is repeated in Uganda, much of the good of the last two decades will be undone by dropping two elements of the successful three pronged programme. And that would be tragic.

Here are a couple of links to learn about this. They cannot be read in ten seconds but then this issue is more important than a ten second read.

I stand by my opionion on this matter: The church’s teaching on condoms is, in my view, misguided, immoral, uncharitable and plain wrong. The facts of the Uganda situation support that view. Thank you for introducing it.

It’s very difficult to communicate well. We’ll have to agree to disagree on the deleterious impact of educating societies of people to fornicate “safely” as well as the roots of secular humanism and its positive or negative impact throughout history. I’m glad we could find some common ground on the main point of education, though. Best wishes (sincerely) Mike

I would add however that my advice would be to never use a condom and to remain chaste.–added for clarity. Although I can see how a non-believer would have a difficult time coming to the truth that chastity is a virtue in these times.

Don’t trust everything your evolutionite friends report you. Your list is quite flawed to say the least!! But 2 out of 10 ain’t so bad .

R.C. Punnett
the Cambridge University Eugenics Society with such luminaries as John Maynard Keynes, R. C. Punnett and Horace Darwin (Charles Darwin’s son). The group was quite active, and held monthly meetings, often featuring addresses by leaders of mainstream eugenics organizations, such as the Eugenics Education Society of London, founded by Francis Galton in 1909. By the time Fisher graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1913, it had over 150 members. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Ronald_Aylmer_Fisher

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (SCIENTIST?)
In England H. G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw, as well as the Fabian leaders Sidney and Beatrice Webb applied Malthusian and Darwinian ideas to politics. Those ideas call for the State determine who can have children.

Theodosius Dobzhansky
Dobzhansky was a Director The American Eugenics Society from 1964 through 1973 and Chairman of the Board from 1969 to 1975.
Although Dobzhansky disagreed with the aims of most eugenic societies, he shared with them broad eugenic concerns. He took the same position on hereditary defects that Morgan took, namely, that people carrying these defects must be counseled not to reproduce. But Dobzhansky even added that if the individual with the defect can’t comprehend the counseling, then they should be sterilized.

I’m not sure what all this eugenics stuff has to do with evolution.

After all eugenics is the ultimate sort of unintelligent design

It is as far from natural selection as you can possibly get.

Variance provides a population’s strength; one need only look at the problems of “purebred” animals to see that.

Dear Alec and Michael,

I’ve been thinking. Yup, I’ve been known to do that! 🙂 You both have expressed thoughts publicly on HIV/AIDS in a way that concisely conveys your convictions. You’ve connected with your audience emotionally, as well as intellectually.

It’s horridly sad to say that there isn’t a quick-fix solution for HIV/AIDS. The number of homeless people dying from this tragic disease is beyond belief! Please consider over the holidays, if time permits, reviewing Vatican documents relating to HIV/AIDS. I’d really appreciate your comments afterwards. This is an extremely important topic the public needs to be aware of and a healthy exchange of facts and ideas could prove to be benefical in the ‘Evolution of Thought’ for all people of the earth! Catholics need to be fully aware of the issues presented forth by the Vatican.

Here is the relationship of what I speak. Evolution says that through constant struggle, the fittest survive. The best are selected out to reproduce, and through this process beneficial traits accumulate to propel a spieces to higher stages on the evolutionary ladder. In his autobiography Darwin confessed that one “can have for his rule of life, as far as I can see, only to follow those impulses and instincts which are the strongest or which seem to him the best ones.” This clearly shows that Darwinism has ethical effects.

Evolution teaches us that the fittest survive, by eliminating the lesser fit. (Might makes Right) This provides “scientific” justification for Hitler’s attempts to eliminate what he saw as the lesser fit. He was merely doing what evolution programed into his genes to do, and in evolution it is not just a bad side-effect, but a key factor in how evolution works. It says death and war are good for the speciese. Darwin himself saw hospitals , vaccines, and freedom of humans to breed as destructive; thus Eugenics was born to combat this “evil” of being humane.

The primary tenets of evolution are metaphysical, rather than scientific. In order for an idea to be scientific, it must be testable and pridictable. Insofar as Evolution is testable and predictable, it fails to be a science.

Evolutionists typically demonstrate the tell-tale signs of an ideologists, including propaganda in schools, excluding their opponents from positions in universities, and ad hominem attacks against critics of their theory.

You might want to make another thread for this concern. I am not sure if condom use is not intrinsically evil. I would think so as its intent–to stop life seems to be contrary to God’s design.

The methods to help reduce the risk, abstinence before contracepption-- I do not know if support of such would be morally licit. God is wholly good and we must never permit evil even to achieve a good end and this assumes we know ends perfectly.

Sex outside of marriage is wrong, always wrong. To hang an if on it about condoms has an implicit idea that you are okay to sin. But the result is a seperation from God’s friendship if you have culpable knowlege.

If they do not have culpable knowlege, if they think fornication is ok, the solution is not to make it easier for them to dwell in darkness, but to inform them as a spiritual work of mercy that they must live chastely. If they still pursue a path of sin, then they at least have cognizance of their actions and may be moved to repentence, which would be a truly good outcome.

WOW—

How did my original post(see title) morph into so many dozens of topics? People are funny. Instead of addressing the original post and providing opinion and answers on the subject matter, they take the ball and run all over the field. Strange.

Every party I’ve ever gone to ends up like this thread. People are constantly moving from one topic to the next. The only difference is at real party, you have a cocktail in your hand. 😛
