I notice that in the spring EWTN cut back drastically in its shortwave broadcasts in the English language, especially what can be picked up in North America.
I am thankful we are not completely cut off, but I did want to get the word out that unless you’re in the GTA, or somewhere along the 401between Cobourg and Belleville (where reception of AM 1460 from Rochester is sketchy by day, and non existent in he evening and overnight) , AM and FM signals are not available, so for those of us who want Catholic radio, the Shortwave signal is the only game in town.
In Canada, broadcasting rules have it that single faith radio stations are not permitted. Yes, thee are some Christian statons, but all MUST make available time to other faiths who may want it, so some have some Jewish or Hindu paid programming where it has been requested , but there is NO Catholic programming on any of these stations. (One of these networks will not even list Catholic Churches on the “church directory” on their website)
EWTN is not available on Sirius, though something called “The Catholic Channel” is, but I am sick and tired of being asked by everyone and everyone to “Subscribe”. why should I oay a fee for programming I do not want , in fact much of which I find highly objectionable from a content standpoint, just to get one station I want?
So, I would like to see if there is anyone out here on this group, who would be willing to join me in letting EWTN know that there is an audience in Canada that values the shortwave programming, and wants iot maintained. Not just for ourselves, but so that other Catholics who do not know about it will have access to it (I already advertise WHIC 1460 Rochester at local parishes, poor signal notwithstanding) and as an evangelization tool for the lapsed Catholics and lost out there.
Canada, especially Quebec is full of lapsed Catholics. Once the center of Catholicism in North America, Quebec is now a Catholic wasteland, now one of the most completely secular places in the world.
Which bings me to my next point: EWTN reaches out in Spanish and English, Why not also in French? Not just to reach the Quebecois, but there are millions in Francophone African countries, as well as in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos who would love a Catholic lifeline in their own language. In those parts of the world, Shortwave radio is still important.
The quality of signal I do get on 15610 and 11520 kHz is infinitely superior to what I get on AM from Rochester, so it would be worth getting the word out that this is available, and hopefully we can have it 24/7 once again.
