I will be taking a qualifying exam in graduate school and observed a student studying for a similar exam far in advance. I now realize that it would be beneficial to study now as well, but I wonder whether I would have thought of this strategy on my own without witnessing the other student. Coincidentally, the student will also be taking this exam and the passing threshold is determined by the relative performance of all of us. Would this be a form of cheating or am I looking too deeply into the matter?

This is too delicate a subject to be asking for advice over the internet. You should discuss this matter with your priest and your graduate advisor (or the department chair if you don’t have an advisor yet).

You are looking WAY too depply into this. Wherever you got the idea to study from is unimportant. Study!

Dear friend

No it’s not cheating and if you and the other student do well it is to the benefit of yourself and everyone else including the student you mentioned.

Follow their good example and study without worrying over it at all. If you worry about it you really are looking too deeply into this!

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Perhaps God is subtlely letting you know it is time to study. Good luck!

Maybe that is a sign from God…if you look around carefully, God is always giving us signs and hints…

For what program are you qualifying? I can’t imagine that you’d go through all the core courses, non-thesis seminars, etc…only to realize that your quals are something to study for. No, it’s not cheating. Yes, you’re stupid to wait so long to study for this exam. God help you when you get to your cumulative exams.
