Examination of Conscience an occasion of sin?

I have been trying to prepare for a general confession. Its meant raking over an unpleasant past and took me to dark recesses I’d rather not revisit. This has posed an occasion of sin for me, and I fear in confessing them it will be similar. 😦

Is there any advice about this? Perhaps from the Saints?

Don’t go there alone. Ask the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and your guardian angel to accompany you.

And don’t linger over it too long. Examine what needs to be examined, confess promptly, and move on.

If your unpleasant past has some elements that need to be gone over with a good Catholic therapist, seek one.

I am waiting for someone to get back to me about a therapist who is dealing in spiritual things, but I’ve not much hope for that. A truly Catholic therapist, loyal to the Magisterium, could be rarer than hen’s teeth.

If you would not object to the idea of talking with a therapist by telephone, try Dr. Gregory Popcak at exceptionalmarriages.com/about.htm . I have heard his radio call-in shows on Catholic radio, and he is excellent — compassionate, common-sense, and very faithful to the Church. (He has a telephone counseling practice; you wouldn’t have to do it on the radio!)

I don’t know if everyone has this experience… but I’ve found that Our dear Lord, has taken me down this path, gradually.

I was able to confess most of my serious sins, right off the bat. And gradually, remembered other sins and confessed. He has worked with me, most patiently… lovingly… and mercifully. And in the process, has taught me to trust in Him. I know He will do the same for you.
