A friend of mine asked for examples of evil that is present in every day life, but isn’t readily apparent. Anyone have examples?

One concrete example from my own family a couple of weeks ago - my wife and kids were having fun dancing to a rap song that had a really catchy beat. I could barely sort out the words but something didn’t sound right. I found the lyrics on Google and they were bad - extremely sexually graphic. My wife and kids (11, 9, and 6) first heard the song from a family TV show. It didn’t even occur to my wife what the song was really about.

The materialism of American Idol?
Well, that’s not really “hidden”…

One way is the casual way in which we use the Lord’s name in vain. It is so common, it is almost hidden from our consciousness. How did the devil accomplish this?

if by “hidden” you mean “common enough that many people accept it as fine”:
  • gossip
  • workplace theft (including overreporting hours worked)
  • pirating software, mp3s, games, etc.
  • Family Guy 😛
look at an in-depth examination of conscience for more ideas.

Watching what you wear, like if you wear a tank top or shorts, or just a low cut shirt it can give guys ideas which is a sin… or if you check someone out. Theres lots of things that people do thats a sin without really realizing it.

some of the examples seem overt, not hidden. the song lyrics is a better example because sometimes you cannot understand what they are saying until you see the written words.

I was thinking more along the lines of vaccines which have been grown in stem cell lines derived from aborted embryos. The evil has been done and most people who accept the good–the vaccine–are not aware of the hidden evil in how they were manufactured.

Another example would be purchasing or paying for a morally good or neutral good or service, from a company whose executives support evil causes and interest groups. It is not likely unless we make it a full time job that we can be up to date on all the activities of a company who sells a product or service we need.

The gay lifestyle books in the high school section of our public library. My 8th grader checked out a book that looked nice enough but then in the book there were two high school girls that had feelings for each other and kissed etc. My daughter was grossed out and quit reading the book. I called the librarian to request that book be moved to the adult section. She said her view was that she needed to provide books like this in the high school section for high school kids that have “gay tendency or feelings”. I think this is promoting and glorifying gay lifestyle. I did not even know about SSA until after college and think that is OK.

Look in the library at what is available and let your librarian, or city council know what is appropriate.

Heck, when it comes to rap even when I see the words written I usually do not know they are sexually graphic, I do not even know what they are trying to say! I need someone to translate it for me…hehehehe. Am I too old? 😛

As for hidden evils…hmmmm…Mine is coffee… I’m spending 5 dollars on a cup of coffee. That five dollars could really be spent more wisely like helping a poor family. I’m learning though.

Not so much hidden, but perhaps ignored - people who live homeless, without decent food or health care, when so many of us just purchase “junk” food and throw so much out.

Then there’s the “playboy bunny” shirts that eight year olds can fit into. It seems so normal these days for children to be in short tight clothes, the only people they’re impressing is the local paedophile.
