Excellent Advent prayer source

This is one of the most helpful websites I have ever found, when it comes to prayer and the Catholic faith. (along with this one)

I have been reading the daily mass readings with my kids, and we have been following the Advent prayer schedule thus far this week, and it’s been awesome. We can’t find our Advent wreath from our move …but we are lighting a novena candle, instead, during our prayers.

The site is very structured to keep you on course for the Advent season…each set of readings and prayers, is broken out day by day. Hope you check it out…just click on the link, and go to daily reflections. You’ll see the Advent section from that point.

Can you elaborate? “our parents?” Do you mean in general, or do you volunteer within a youth group?

I will say though, that my son last night, when I thanked them both for praying with me…said…‘well, mom, it’s kind of forced on us.’ Hmmm. I said, really? You mean you don’t enjoy praying and spending time with God? He said, ‘No, I do. I just don’t pray as long as this.’ I said…‘Jesus gave His life for us. We can spend an extra 15 minutes in prayer, nightly. And, it will hopefully help you to see how much deeper you can pray.’ He nodded. I think he gets it, just with teenagers…everything, unless it suits them in some way, can seem boring, or like a chore. He likes the whole candle lighting aspect of it. And, he did ask a lot of questions about yesterday’s Gospel reading…so, it is really a great time to spend with one’s child(ren).

I do find the Advent prayers to be far different than any prayers I have seen…it’s a wonderful way to deepen one’s conversations with the Lord…and to inspire our children to seek a deeper prayer life, as well. They also like the responsorial psalms, as part of the Advent readings. I think the innovation of prayer life during Advent is especially inspiring for kids. The prayers are definitely unique, and down to earth. My son said last night…‘what are we being saved from?’ (in the prayers, one of them had to do with…Father save us…) I said…‘Hell, death, sin.’ He said…‘aaaahhhhh…’

I’ve been trying to do a little prayer service while lighting an advent candle each night before supper. We’ll read a short passage from the bible, or some other short prayer, and say grace. I’m struggling with the oldest dd, though (16 years old- too old for this stuff ). Everyone else seems to like it, though.

Hi mommy! Yes, my 15 yr old was a bit reluctant, but practice makes perfect. He willingly asked when we were going to say the Advent prayer tonight… I was pleasantly surprised…I try not to show too much excitement though, because he might not ask again. lol I think if you just make it a daily thing, your son will grow to enjoy it…even if he doesn’t admit it. There is something about those Advent prayers that really envelope a person’s being…even our teenagers.

I love love love that website, ms parrot! I actually post my sig lines from their daily devotionals…

I really love their reflections, because sometimes I’m totally clueless as to what a particular parable might relate to, and the authors always manage to bring it around to modern times, you know?

Exactly! I am thinking of subscribing to the magazine. I’m glad my parish had it out near the bulletins - it’s like a treasure of information.
