Hello Lemonbeam:)

I will try to help.
When I was looking up the verse, I noticed that it is something completely different depending on the translation of the bible you are using.

EX 22,18 (Douay) “Wizards thou shalt not suffer to live”.

EX 22,18 (NIV) “You must not allow a sorceress to live”.

EX 22,18 (NAB) “Anyone who lies with an animal shall be put to death”. EX 22,17 talks about the sorceress. Interesting.

I will assume you are questioning EX 22,18 about the sorceress.
I will hopefully answer you question with other verses using the NAB
LV 19: (26)…Do not practice divination or sooth saying". (31)" Do not go to mediums or fortune tellers, for you will be defiled by them. I, the lord, am you God".

LV 20: (6)“Should anyone turn to mediums or fortune tellers and follow their wanton ways, I will turn against such a one and cut him off from his people”. (27) A man or woman who acts as a medium or fortune teller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their deaths".

IS 8,19 "And when they say to you, “Inquire of mediums and fortune tellers (who chirp and mutter*); should not a people inquire of their gods, apply to the dead on behalf of the living?”.
  • chirp and mutter a mocking reference uttered by necromancers. such practices were forbidden.
Clear as mud? 🙂 Hope it helped
