Exodus 22:28

“You shall give me the first born of your sons”.

Can anyone provide the explanation on this requirement being made in Exodus 22:28?

It is a matter of consecration of the firstborn to God. From the Latin “con-secrare”, this word literally means “to make something become sacred”, this act means that someone or something is separated from the rest for a sacred purpose, in an irrevocable way.

In this we find a clear Messianic meaning.

God saved the firstborn on the night of the passover. The Israelites slaughtered the lamb and spread the blood of the lamb on their door, and the angel of death passed over the house and the firstborn did not die. For “Redeeming” the firstborn with the death of a lamb, God demanded that the firstborn - humans and animals - be consecrated into his service.

That’s the literal sense. The spiritual sense is how it points to Christ, the firstborn son of God, and to our redemption by Christ the Lamb.

**Numbers 2:11-13 . . . **The Lord said to Moses, “It is I who have chosen the Levites from the Israelites in place of every first-born that opens the womb among the Israelites. The Levites, therefore, are mine, because every first-born is mine. When I slew all the first-born in the land of Egypt, I made all the first-born in Israel sacred to me, both of man and of beast. They belong to me; I am the Lord”.
