Informal exorcism at St. Paul Cathedral prompts investigation

A report was filed with St. Paul police, who said the case could be prosecuted as a hate crime if someone is arrested.

“It does have an element of hate and bias to it,” said police spokesman Paul Schnell, who noted that the incident seemed aimed to coincide with the presence of the Rainbow Sash group.

Schnell said police have no leads, but several religious people familiar with the case said it is probably the work of fringe Catholics who advocate using sacramentals, or holy objects, to cleanse places where gays take communion.

“I don’t know who did it,” said Dr. David Pence, a member of Ushers of the Eucharist. “I do know that some people have used sacramentals to engage in some kind of holy war against people. Nobody wants to see church property damaged in the name of an exorcism.”

Jesus tells us we will be delivered up even by our parents, brothers, relatives, and friends (Lk 21:16). This will result in some of us being put to death. Jesus has made it very clear that, before there can be peace, there will be division in families. “A household of five will be divided three against two and two against three; father will be split against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law” (Lk 12:52-53).

Our families will be under extreme pressure in the future and severely tried. Jesus reveals the future not to discourage us but to encourage us to plan accordingly in the present. For example, if we were building a car and we knew this car would be driven through a crossfire of bullets, we would build an armored car. So, if we’re building a family and we know this family will be attacked by the devil, then we will build an “armored family.” “Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil” (Eph 6:11). “You must put on the armor of God if you are to resist on the evil day” (Eph 6:13). On Thanksgiving Day, many of us will be gathering with our families. We can engage in superficialities, keep quiet about Jesus, and pray by ourselves. Or we can ask the Spirit to work through us in building strong, deeply committed, holy families. Would you talk to your family differently if you knew they might betray you?

PS: The Priest should of done the Exorcism!
 
I don’t know, but it doesn’t sound that bad to me… When leadership of a Russian Orthodox Church learned that a church had been used for a same sex “marriage ceremony”, they razed the church to the ground. There is a tendancy (out of fear for pollitical correctness) to not call evil what it it is. Exorcism might not be quite the right approach based on what I have read of this procedure, but, at least, there is an acknowledgement that evil has to be faced and dealt with–rather than pushing under the carpet at every turn like the Episcopal Church leadership do.
 
even if an exorcism is warranted the bishop has the authority to appoint someone to that job, and if a church needs to be reconsecrated, that is also his perogative. vigilante excorcism and lay people making judgements about the alleged sinfulness or state of the soul of someone else is an abuse of the worst sort.

Well put. Lay people should not arrogate to themselves the prerogatives of bishops. Moreover, exorcism is appropriate to demonic possessions, and I don’t believe buildings can be possessed. Desecrated, perhaps, but not possessed. For a person in the state of mortal sin to receive the Eucharist is a sacrilege, no doubt. But I dare say, it may happen every day in any given church building. We should be concerned that our brothers and sisters are committing sacrilege (gay or otherwise), not because of the harm they might do to Christ (which is none at all), but because of the harm they are doing to themselves and others through scandal. The proper response is not exorcism, but prayer and penances performed on their behalf. “Rend your hearts, not your garments” – do so for your brothers and sisters “in order make up what is lacking in the sufferings of (the Body of) Christ.”
 
On the other hand one might wish to communicate ones distress to the bishop by preferring to worship, and contribute, in another parish. 😉
 
Lets settle down and reread what was said in the Grand Forks article.
  1. No one knows who spread oil and salt in the Church.
  2. There is no indication of how much salt and oil was spread.
  3. I seriously doubt that it would cost “thousands” to clean up. Salt is water soluable (water in sponges-then towels.)Oil cleans up with a degreaser with Scott’s towels. I wish I had the job.I would do it for $12 per hour. I might make $100.
    4.The police are just guessing. Some policeman suggests that it was a hate crime. He doesn’t know! They like to glamorise everything! It was silly to say they don’t know if it was a hate crime until someone was arrested. Total speculation.
  4. Yes, Exorcised Holy Oil and Exorcised salt is used by an Excorcist but not all the time. This information comes from Father. Churches have been exorcised in Italy in the past decade. The Church is a building. Father Amorth says buildings and homes have had the presence of demons! G. Amorth, John Paul II’s Exorcist ( He is the Bishop of Rome and Fr. Amorth is the Head Exorist of Rome). You can read it in the Father’s Book,“An Exorcist Tells His Story” or another,“An Exorcist, More Stories”. They are $9.95 each.
  5. Obtaining Exorcised oil and salt would require the cooperation of a Priest( sometimes a Bishop)
  6. It seems to me that the Gay people are trying to cause in the least confusion and at the most a suppresion of the Traditional Catholics by getting the police involved.
  7. That Bishop needs to get out of his office and get over to that Church and take over after he gets the facts.
