Exorcisms

One of my friends is on a prolife crusade this summer. In her email, she said that they went to a monastery and the priest their exorcised them each individually.
What exactly is an exorcism then? Because I thought an exorcism was for people posessed by demons (like in that movie, The Exorcist), but this cannot be the case. Also, I think I’ve heard of priests exorcising holy water!!!???
So, would someone kindly explain what it is.

Exorcising holy water is casting any evil presence that is present in the water and then blessing the water. In the older rite for blessing water, their used to be an exorcism that was said, but in the new one there is not.

ECCLESIASTICAL EXORCISMS

Besides exorcism in the strictest sense – i.e. for driving out demons from the possessed – Catholic ritual, following early traditions, has retained various other exorcisms, and these also call for notice here.

(2) Baptismal exorcism

(3) Other Exorcisms
