The St. Benedict’s Medal is a sacramental that can be used by the laity. Of course any help would come from St. Benedict! 👍

Yes, indeed it is. It is unfortunate that since the New Book of Blessings came out that one has to bring a copy of the traditional blessings from the Roman Missal to bless them.
There are few constitutive Blessings in the New Book of Blessings.

Unless you go to a traditional Latin Mass Church. But God Provides!

Read Fr. Z's blog "What does the Prayer Say" or something equivalent.

I usually get up at 2:30 AM and say prays for those suffering from Satan's attacks during the night. I am very tired.
Many Blessings,

Any layperson can say a prayer of abjuration and ask Our Lord to cast out an evil spirit.

An example would be:

“In the name of Jesus, I cast out the spirit of (impurity, greed, anger, etc.) to be sent to the foot of the cross to be judged by Our Lord.”

or simply: “Blood of Jesus, wash over me”

While not an official “exorcism” this type of prayer is a tool – along with sacramentals (holy water, blessed candles, palms, etc). in dealing with an immediate threat.

Frequent confession is the most powerful tool of exorcism that we, as layfolk, have.

I do not like to dwell on topics like exorcism, evil spirits, the occult, etc., while the enemy of souls is powerful, he can not touch us if we stay close to God and his Church.

The closer one gets to God, it seems the more likely he is to be touched by the devil, as evidenced by the lives of some of our saints.

I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. 🙂

The statement meant that one should stay away from such things as curiosity has a way of roping you in to things you really would be better off ignoring.

If you frequent the confessional and stay close to God and His Church, attacks of the enemy are like pesky houseflies (cf. St. Teresa of Avila).

ies You should be motivated by Christian Love & Charity. Families should pray the Rosary together daily and one should seriously consider what his Holiness Pope Leo XIII wishes concerning the prayer he wrote.

Many Blessings,

Oh, here we go with the uncharitable canard…

What should we stay away from and what things are we better off ignoring?

Thanks.

Exorcisms, for example. While it’s interesting, wouldn’t we be better off reading a devotional book or the biography of a saint ?

We’re better off ignoring the satanic, the occult, and new age philosophies.

I believe that frequent confession is the best weapon against the enemy.
Do we really need to hear/see/read about all the gory details of an exorcism ?

I would say NO. 🙂

Thanks for the post.

There have been some inspirational books written by our Exorcists. Exorcists definitely see God’s power in ways that most don’t. Books about exorcism, devotional books, and biographies of saints are all good. Let the Holy Spirit guide us.

I agree that most people are better off not studying satanic, occult, or new age works.

Reconciliation is a gift and a powerful weapon. Let’s use all of God’s gifts as often as we can.

I have heard/seen/read enough about the devil to know that almost anything is possible.

Thank you all for your informative responses.

I’m of the view now that we can use prayers of protection but are not allowed to perform exorcisms.

IOW just because you can doesn’t mean you should. 👍

Satan is always playing with us and often with impunity. Our protection is frequent receiving of The Eucharist and staying free of mortal sin. The Devil cannot harm us when we are in grace and we are protected also by the best known prayer of deliverance…The Lord’s Prayer…"…and lead us not into temptation but DELIVER us from EVIL. Amen ".

Oh, it does not follow logically what you are saying. There are people suffering and to help them one has to be motivated by Christian love and charity. That is because Christ is Love. I do not imply anything about you per se but state a general statement.

We must “look evil in the face and combat its effects, especially against its causes, to its ultimate cause, which is Satan without downloading the problem on others, on society or God, but acknowledging our own responsibility.”

Now I wonder who said that? Pope Benedict XVI said that during Lent.

Hey guys, this seems to be as good a place as any to bring this up, for years since I was a young teen I got into Tarot card reading, studying the occult, into various eastern religions. I soon grew out of it but I began to have horrible nightmares, strange things in my home would happen, this followed me into adulthood, I’ve had terrible luck in life financially, with jobs, health, losing material things, I’ve been through 7 cars in 10 years, I’ve been forced to move 5 times. This demon seems to follow me no matter where I go, it’s put a strain on my marriage and everything. I can’t get a priest to help me, they say that there isn’t anything they can do about Diabolic Oppression that I can’t do. I need help, I’ve called my diocese (Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston) and they seem concerned that I’ve gotten the response I got from 3 priests already, the Vicar General took my number but never got back to me. What options do I have? This has been going on for 14 years…I’m at the end of my rope…

Dear EC,
Code:
Don't worry help is on the way. There will come a time when you reflect on all this and you will see Christ intervening in your life. Pray the Rosary, Go to Confession & Mass & receive Holy Communion.

Follow basically what Gidge says she does. She trusts in Christ and that is a Big Help.
Don’t worry, Help is on the way,
BluesPicker

I pray a Prayer of Protection to the Precious Blood of Jesus and the St. Michael prayer. All disciples are called to pray similarly; however the Apostles had the authority to bind and loose. The bishop of a diocese has the authority to supervise the training and actions of exorcists. They must be humble and prayerful or they run into the danger of falling themselves. This is for their protection and the protection of those they are exorcising. Satan is real, not to be trifled with. If we stay in the state of grace and act in obedience to the Church we will have protection.

Any time that you pray or make the sign of the cross that is a certain type of excorcism. You are correct that only a priest designated by his bishop is allowed to do a formal excorcism.
