Jesus made a statement I don’t understand. When a woman came with expensive ointment to anoint Jesus, one of the disciples said the woman should have put the money to better use by giving it to the poor. Jesus, accepting the ointment, said something like “The poor will always be with you, but I will not always be with you.” This seems contradictory to His teachings about the poor, and charity, etc. Can anyone explain this?

Thanks.

wasn’t it judas that made the comment about the money? you think he cared for the poor or someone else’s well being? he later sold jesus for silver after witnessing all his miracles. i think jesus’ comment shows that he comes even before the needs of the poor. love God first then your neighbor.

It’s not contradictory. It just shows that we there’s nothing wrong with both glorifying Jesus with our monetary means, and helping the poor with our monetary means. Those who decry the Church’s use of precious metals, art, and architecture to glorify Jesus fail to realize the meaning of this passage.

It’s about priorities. We only lose when we neglect our worship of God.

Ah, I understand now. Your answers make a lot of sense. Priorities, love God first, then love your neighbor, and the whole idea that spending money to glorify the Lord does not negate giving to the poor. Thank you all very much.

Matthew 26:11 & Mark 14:7 FYI

& remember: it all comes from God anyway so it’s good to show him we remember that.
