Extent of Syncretism In Catholicism in Latin America?

I would like to know more about sycretic beliefs and practices in the Church in Latin America that are derived from native beliefs. What sort of differences are there, and to what extent is this sycretized Catholicism different from the mainstream? Is it so different as to be heretical? Additionally, is there perhaps an estimate as to how many followers syncretized Catholicism in Latin America has?
