Outside the church there is no salvation. This lies in stark contrast to many peoples beliefs today that all good people get into Heaven. This doctrine has been continually defended by the Magisterium since it was initiated. Although it is not discussed a lot I thought I would ask for your opinions on the matter. Just wanting to know what others think.

Here’s the opinion of St. Peter, the first Bishop of Rome:

"And Peter opened his mouth and said: ‘Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.’ " (Acts 10:34-35)

I had a conversion on this after looking into it. The modernists of our time like to water down this important Church teaching by saying through no fault of their own an individual may be saved. See CCC 846.

The no fault of your own clause is ambiguous and talking out of both sides of the Church’s mouth. Sure on the one hand God can do anything and is not bound by “Out Side The Church There Is No Salvation.” However, there is no evidence of this in history. If the modernists feel that strongly about salvation outside the Church, they should really give us some examples and start the canonization process for someone who either left the Church or never were in the Church to begin with.

The problem with saying that some may be save through no fault of their own is two things.
  1. It is judgemental and it assume that we can judge if it is someone’s fault or not for being outside the Church
  2. It takes away from the reality of the saving Grace of the Sacrements. The way to think of this is teaching is through the Sacrements:
a)Baptism is necessary for salvation
b)Those sins forgiven are forgiven those retained are retained. How can they forgive if they do no hear the sins.
c)Unless you eat His Body you have no life within you.

Unfortunately the moderist wing of the Church has decided not to teach this teaching through the saving Grace of the Sacrements.

No one can judge who gets to judge who is “invincibly ignorant” from the earthly Church except for God.

Yes, and based upon this we need to trust what the Church has always taught and assume that if they are outside the Church they are headed for hell.
