Extraordinary Minister approaching the Tabernacle

There is nothing from the Church to suggest hosts should be divided before additional hosts are used from the tabernacle.
Like many parishes, our priests retrieve from the tabernacle all of the remaining Blessed Sacrament from earlier Masses - during the Lamb of God. However, the sacristan preparing for the Mass is a good judge of how many hosts will be needed and has until to offertory to add more. If we still run low, dividing the hosts is our only option.

Thanks. It appears that it is something that should be learned in the seminary in either a course on Canon law, or in a course on Liturgy. Or both. It was news to me.
It maybe is but they might forget, given it doesn’t happen often. Or perhaps its a misinterpretation of the law. Canon law simply says that you cannot consecrate outside of the Eucharistic Celebration. The entire Mass is a Eucharistic Celebration, of course consecration has its proper place within the celebration and shouldn’t be done outside of that. If you read De Defectibus, you will notice that before consecration too is that you need to offer the bread and wine. So if you do not follow the Mass with the offertory and thanksgiving, you’re not following the licit way to consecrate the bread and wine. So a priest cannot run to the sacristy, break open a pack of bread, bring it to the altar, and just go ahead and consecrate it. Its still valid though, but highly illicit.

There wouldn’t be so many issues/questions if extraordinary ministers were rare as they were intended to be, not the norm.

Actually, EMHC’s are not the source of the question concerning consecration. And if they were as rare as you suggest, I would posit that there would be more, not fewer questions because there would be less opportunity to work out the kinks.

Those who do not want EMHCs to exist are never going to be happy about the issue of their existence until such time as they no longer exist. Given the size of parishes and and the number of priests, that issue most likely will be with us for the foreseeable future.

We can all agree that there are plenty of circumstances where there are too many EMHCs. However, unless and until bishops start micromanaging parishes (which generally has not occurred since the time of Christ), or some specific rules come out as to when and how many, there are going to be disputes. Ultimately, now, it is up to the pastor to make that decision, based on guidelines that are less than specific. And it appears that most bishops do not have the issue on their radar.

However, as noted, even if there were specific rules and they were carefully and closely followed, there are those who still would not be satisfied. 🤷

Did you read what I wrote?

“There is nothing from the Church to suggest hosts should be divided before additional hosts are used from the tabernacle.”

Someone else inferred that hosts should first be broken before accessing the tabernacle. That is wrong. In reality it’s a practical matter – there is no rule one way or the other.

NO, the post you quoted didn’t refer to breaking them before going to the Tabernacle for more, it was about breaking them before using unconsecrated bread to intinct to give out Communion.
