I am a Traditional (not “Traditionalist”) Catholic who receives in the mouth from the Priest even whether I’m at the Mass of St. Pius V or the Mass of Paul VI.

However I do see some value as an EMHC. Perhaps not at mass, but I do think it’s a good idea to have people to deliver the Host to the Homebound, however I think it would be even better if they EMHC adopt the Eastern custom of using a spoon rather than their hands.

Of course that’s my personal opinion, not Church teaching. Despite my traditional beliefs, one of those fundamental beliefs is obedience to Rome and the Pope, and if they say it’s ok for there to be EMHC, then who am I to say no?

I would not become an EMHC, as it is not something I desire to do, nor am I comfortable touching the Body and Blood of Christ. But the Church allows it, so follow your conscience.

As an EMHC, I do share in the concerns of the OP. There are instances where we are overused and the extra-ordinary has become, in many areas, the ordinary. Daily Mass is one such occasion. An EMHC assisting the celebrant when there are only 30 people (and this is one species) is not justified, as I read Redemptionis Sacramentum.

In my parish, we normally have just one EMHC assisting the priest when only one species is distributed. But, for the smaller attendances at Mass, we have two EMHCs assisting with the Precious Blood. For the larger numbers, we have one EMHC assisting the priest with the distribution of the Body of Christ while four handle the Precious Blood. Of course, when the deacon is there, he and the priest distribute Holy Communion so one EMHC steps down.

Ask the priest who asked you to be an EMHC about your concerns. He knows why he asked you, he can tell you what role he has in mind for you, and he can tell you what standards he expects in general from those who assist him in that capacity.

I think it is a good sign that he selected you personally, actually. It shows he cares who does it, and not just that a body is in each certain place on Sundays.
