Fellow CA Forum-ers,

What is your opinion on manned space exploration, particularly in light of the Gospel?

Thanks

I have to ask: what does the Gospel have to do with space exploration?

Now, if intelligent extra-terrestrial beings are ever discovered, that will be a challenge for the Church. What is their relationship with God?

I would hardly call what we do now as manned space exploration! A couple people in a fancy tin can 150 miles or so above the ground? Even going to mars won’t be much better.

It will be interesting if we ever establish contact with aliens, even more so if they are monotheistic. Then the arguments will begin, is thier God the same as ours?

There is only one God, so yes their God would be the same as ours. The question would only be do they correctly understand the true nature of God or not.

God Bless

I would be prone to think much as humans differ from eachother, so might all those soul having creatures created in God’s elusive and not necessarily direct image.

They might on one hand have a better relationship in a direct sense, or be lost. I would imagine their history at the very least resemble our prior to Moses and perhaps never recieve a Moses and on. Or perhaps never divert from the days of something like Cain and Abel. Had humans not diverted, there would be no “Jewish” but just people. People still following the simplest form of following God in the fallen world.

Even more mind blowing could be like finding a non fallen Adam and Eve.

Could also be a planet so fallen that they are like the world prior to the flood and God chose not to cleanse it. And we might be in for somw tough times.

Perhaps thenfallen nature of strange intelligent lifeforms explains some of the imagery in revelation etc… perhaps the antichrist is born to a reptilian like species and has the appearance of a dragon?

Who knows 🤷

Perhaps the Coty of God will be a planet in a giant intergalactic community? Perhaps…

Let’s find evidence for them first.

And even then the Gospel may have no meaning for them: They would not have “bodies” as we understand them, might not have to “die,” and so might not see any need for preparing for what might happen “after that.”

We should explore space for our own knowledge, not because of “space brothers” who might be there or not, or be too far away to concern with.

I could be wrong, but I think God intends for us (when we are ready) to travel our solar system and perhaps even the stars (with warp travel is possible).

With all the hundreds of trillions of star systems in the universe you think the odds of another life bearing planet to be nil? I have to disagree. While the confluence of events that are required for life are exceedingly rare, the number of potential planets and stars out there makes it an almost certainty that something has evolved somewhere else as well IMO.

Otherwise God created a universe that is frankly a big waste of space 😉

On Friday nights, the History Channel has programs about Ancient Aliens.

I watched until they started saying humans were planted on this earth by these Aliens. They even said Jesus may have been an extraterrestrial!

I don’t buy their garbage anymore! :nope:

I believe the human race in intended to travel to and live amongst the stars, and I exhort you to believe and work for the same.

On Catholic Radio I once heard that our English word “earth” which we use in our translation of the Book of Genesis might mean “universe” in the original Hebrew. “Fill the earth and subdue” might very well mean “fill the universe and subdue it.”

This doesn’t need to have anything to do with sentient extraterrestrials. What I mean is we don’t have to worry about Drake’s equation. If we meet people out in space, well and good. But I think our driving force is to move to the stars and live!

But there are so many other worlds, and a lot of people said that the laws of physics ban manned flight before the balloon and airplane showed up. I do think that FTL (faster-than-light) travel is a long shot (you see what I did there?), but I’m not listing it as an impossibility.

On the other hand, that leads to Fermi’s Paradox all over again.

I had a typo… I meant to say “IF warp drive is possible.” It’s a big IF

Extra-terrestrial nobility can be found the divine interest of the divine ability of man to achieve perfect and true liberation, by reason of existential integrity of the moral Love.

I’m not even sure what you meant by that.

Still, we should explore space, but not be too disappointed if we find no-one there, or if whoever is there is just perfectly incompatible with us.

Man does not have “divine ability”.

Heretical nonsense.

Don’t forget, St. Francis preached to the birds and the fish! We can preach the Gospel to all beings – inanimate, animate, rocks, birds, trees, comets, stars, and all! This is how we must go into outer space! Amen, amen!
