Last Sunday I taped AFV and got just the first few minutes of Extreme Makeover Home Edition (which comes on after AFV). And it featured a widower whose wife died from a pulmonary embolus. Did anyone watch this show? What caused the embolus? A pulmonary embolus is a blood clot that breaks free and floats around your circulation, eventually getting lodged in your lungs and often killing you. I immediately wondered if this was a blood clot caused by taking the birth control pill. I got the impression that the wife was healthy and just suddenly died one day. Is this correct?

I can’t answer your questions, but I watched it, too. It was soooo sad and it almost made me cry. Made me think about how we can all die in an instant, even if we are perfectly healthy or not.

There was no discussion of the cause…Many things can lead to this kind of event, I believe.
The most common cause I have heard of, is a congenital condition.

This is one of my favorite programs–I had to miss it this week, but I try to watch it regularly. It really does a great job of renewing my faith in people…The fact that so many love this program is a real inspiration, also.

Thank you for answering my question. Since they didn’t mention what it was from, I am darn sure it was the Pill. I have been noticing lately that adverse effects of hormonal contraception are just not talked about on network TV. Even the Duggar family’s interview was edited to exclude the fact that they had a miscarriage due to being on the Pill and that that was the reason for making them want a large family. Just imagine how many people would stop taking the Pill and all the “bad press” the Pill would have gotten if they said this wonderful lady on Extreme Makeover died because of side effects? Oh well, at least we know the truth about the Pill (and of course, she could have died from unknown causes, although in that case I am sure they would have said “unknown causes” in the show).

By the way, I like the show too, but I just don’t have time to watch it anymore 🙂

I’ve seen parts of this show many times and always liked it. But never seen the whole thing from the beginning (I’m a channel flipper!).

One worry I’ve always had is whether these people REALLY get to keep these homes. The reason they get on the show is due to severe hardships.

If this is the case, how exactly are they going to pay the taxes on $600,000 worth of new house added to their yearly income on that dreaded day, April 15? These don’t seem like the kind of people that have an extra $170,000 laying around to send to the IRS…

I love the show (it makes me cry every single time I watch it), and that was one of my questions, too. Fortunately, the PTB on the show foresaw people asking that, too. On one episode sometime last year, they did say that for those who could not afford the higher taxes or utility bills, they make arrangements for them to be paid. They don’t just give the family a new home and leave them at the mercy of the taxman or the utility companies.

It wasn’t on yesterday in Michigan. They showed a football game instead - Lions were playing the Packers.

My wife and I ran across that show by accident about a month ago (“The Case of the One-Armed Lobsterman”), and we’ve been hooked ever since. The widower with the three girls was a real tear-jerker.

Hey, the poor woman had an embolism and died. Why do some of us have a knee-jerk response leading us to think that she died because she was taking birth control pills?

Because of the culture of death agenda present in the secular media networks. That’s all 🙂 Oh, and the fact that birth control pills are one of the main causes of blood clots (which lead to embolism) in otherwise perfectly healthy, young women.

I think your assumption is rude and needs to be retracted. This is not a charitable thing.

You have no idea what caused this, and you are spreading your ideas as gossip.

My mom’s best friend died of a congenital embolism at age 26. She was not using birth control. She never awoke from a nap.

These things happen and to make up reasons why is a horrible thing to do to this grieving family!

There is nothing false about my statement. Nowhere (really, do you *need * me to point it out?) do I say that *all * pulmonary emboli are cause from taking hormonal contraception. Furthermore, do you know this family’s position regarding the Pill? If they are like most Americans (speaking from statistics here, pure statistics!!), they find nothing wrong with hormonal contraception, and this statement would be to them no different than if she had died from a blood clot that was formed due to inactivity on a long flight.

You might be misconstruing my remarks as demeaning the woman and her family. Nope, I am just stating the facts and statistics and, to the displeasure of some here, pointing out the pro-death bias present in our secular media networks.

If you are going to discuss the show, perfect. If you want to discuss the MSMs fascination with death, or artificial contraception, you need to take it to Moral Theology. I am going to reopen the thread, but any more speculations regarding the cause of death of the women in the show in question, and the thread goes away and the perp will will the chance to focus on the Advent season without CA Forums as a distraction til after Christmas.

Happy Holidays.

I am sorry for discussing this in the wrong forum 🙂 Moral theology, here I come!!

After discussing this topic with other moderators, I have decided to close this particular thread. It got off on the wrong foot and has more or less stayed there. If you wish to discuss the entertainment value of a particular show, the by all means do so. If you want to talk about the moral value of a particular piece of popular entertainment, start the thread in moral theology. Please do not speculate as to the cause of events so as to try to make a case.

God bless and Merry Christmas.
