Extreme Makeover - Soul Edition (Fr. Larry Richards)

Hi All:

Just wanted to let you know that my husband and I attended the Parish Mission of St. Michael’s in Exeter, NH that Fr. Larry Richards gave (is giving) Extreme Makeover - Soul Edition - if he comes to a town near you - I highly recommend attending.

It was magnificent. The reason I am writing though, is my husband is not Catholic - however he attends Mass and all Holy Days with me and our two girls.

We were discussing the Soul Edition Makeover and he loves Fr. Larry and said that he could swing either way - he could just as easily be Catholic, than Baptist. He doesn’t practice his faith - his parents go to a fundamentalist Baptist Church in town - whose Pastor on many occassion has mislead (lied) to his congregation about our Catholic Church. So we don’t set foot in their church anymore (we went on occassion for specials).

My husband question to me is - why though, would someone want to join the Catholic Church with all the rules and regulations - than belong to a church that all they have to do is say the sinner’s prayer and they will be all set? No matter if they go to church, or steal, or whatever the sin.

Even if I tell him that scripture doesn’t say that … he says that his parent’s church say scripture does. It is a he says, she says.

Any advise from anyone. I know that he knows he feels God at Mass … our down fall is our priests in our parish are extremely boring - and although we Catholics are there for the Eucharist, he is used to dynamic speakers at church. That is why he likes Fr. Larry - he is just so incredible.

I am getting him Rome Sweet Home for his IPOD … because he listens to books - not much of a reader - that book made me a revert to our faith. He asked me for it last night - so I am going to buy it today!

Any advise on his question - would sure be helpful!

Why would someone join the Catholic Church with the rules and regulations verses a church that tells them they are all set for heaven by simply reciting a sinner’s prayer? Because we don’t get to “pick and choose” what is true. Something either is true or it isn’t, but truth stands apart from our opinions. I stay in the Catholic Church because I believe it teaches truth.

There are lots of verses in the Bible and lots different ways to interpret them. Just because some preachers teach “once saved always saved” issue doesn’t mean it’s true. Just because a priest or preacher says something doesn’t make it true either, unless what they say is true. While you can get into “he said, she said” arguments, ultimately what matters is truth. I believe Truth is found in the Person of Jesus Christ, and I believe He established the Catholic Church to help lead us to Himself.

Your thread title attracked me. Some think Jesus makes us righteous by applying some sort of heavy spiritual make-up over our otherwise ugly, sinful selves. I think Jesus wants to transforms us through His grace, making us truly beautiful and holy.

Please ask him to show you in Scripture where it says that all you have to do is say the sinner’s prayer and you’re home free. Paul says, and I don’t have a citation, something about working out his salvation in fear & trembling. Surely if it was so easy as to just say a prayer, St. Paul wouldn’t have said what he did.
