I’ve been a nurse for 35+ years, and have found myself increasingly intrigued by this topic. I’ve done some reading on it over the years, and there’s been a little flurry of articles about faith and health in the recent past.

I’m wondering what Catholic Answers readers think about the topic.

For patients or their families:
  • If you or your family has had a relevant experience, would you be willing to share?
  • Has a doctor or nurse ever shown an interest in your spiritual needs?
  • Have you wished they would?
If you’re a medical practitioner, how do you feel about discussing faith with your patients?
  • Have you ever prayed with a patient?
  • Have you ever thought a patient wanted to talk with you about spiritual/ religious matters?
  • Has such a conversation ever made you feel uncomfortable?
If you’re interested in reading some of the articles I’ve run into recently, go to acts17verse28.blogspot.com/2009/07/faith-and-health.html

When I was younger, I had an NFP-only OB-GYN who always talked about the state of your soul. He even had a place on his office visit form for it. It was kind of like spiritual direction. I often thought how wonderful it was, and how I’d like to jettison the medical part of the visit and just talk with him about spiritual things - maybe every week!

How special, Betsy. I’ve never had a physician discuss faith with me, and I consider my faith to be as essential to my health as oxygen or water.
