This week my 4-yo starts faith formation classes Wednesdays. I’ve already been teaching him all I can. He knows stuff like the Hail Mary, who Nicodemus was, and the general idea of the Paschal Sacrifice. My question is what it normally involves for the little ones? I assume it’ll vary widely since there’s no sacrament they’re prepping for.

Going through the famous Bible stories is common at that age.

I teach 1st grade faith formation and we go through bible stories and have a game or activity related to the story, and usually also a worksheet or coloring sheet. We also learn about saints or special prayers (like the Guardian Angel prayer for example) and we have a class patron saint. I would imagine that a preschool/4yo class will be similar with maybe less emphasis on worksheets that require writing/spelling. Your child is probably a little ahead of the game already knowing the Hail Mary, a lot of them don’t have it memorized yet in my class.

We have used the Faith & Life series at home for DSD. Now, we didn’t use the Grade 1 book but I’ve used it before as a RE teacher. It goes through the basics. Lesson 1 is about God our Father. Lesson 2 is called Heaven is Our Home, and so forth. It introduced basic ideas about original sin and the need for a Saviour.

There are appropriate materials available for RE classes for this age. Don’t forget, though, that not everything in an Re class for little ones is about the materials. Being together with age-mates and learning a classroom routine, hearing stories from the Bible (both Old and New Testament ones), praying together, enjoying little art/craft activities related to the lesson, and singing together are also a part of the time spent in the class. Think about how you enjoy being with fellow believers and know that’s what will happen with your child in his class.

99.99999% of the adults in St Average Parish do not know who Nicodemus was, so, he could likely TEACH the class!!
