I usually ignore Atheists and their offensive comments. Most of the ones I meet are offensive and have no reasonable explanation in why they don’t Believe in God.

Then I found this thread: infidels.org/library/modern/richard_carrier/atheism.html

And WOW did it make me think alot. My mind started having a debate with itself. Was he wrong? or right? I can’t answer that because I DONT KNOW HOW. Please help me with this. I don’t want to lose my faith! Please help!

I just went and read your link. It’s standard rubbish. It would take a very long post to pull apart each of the different elements, and debunk them with the Christian equivalent, but I recommend you doing just exactly that. Pull one major question at a time from this post, and make that a thread. You will then get your answer in the way you’d like to have them. Per each point of the thread. In general, a thoughtful reading of Isaiah, the Gospels, The Acts, The Epistles, and accompanied by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and you can, with prayer, dismiss every single point this fellow has written down. I wouldn’t give it too much thought. He hasn’t done anything unique here. Dawkins is much more interesting for an atheist, and even he’s been soundly debunked. Just read your scripture, and some good apologetics. Plenty here at Catholic.com, and also at NewAdvent.com. Best of luck, and God love you,

Steven

I am not sure which part of this article makes you question your faith. I KNOW in my heart that God is real. I see these people as mis-guided, not that they are evil. For we are ALL childern of God and God seeks to know ALL of us not just Christians. I dont know what happens to other people of other faiths or even atheists for that matter. None of us can judge what is in someone elses heart. However i will say this:
  • There is certainly a God. Without a doubt, no question asked. I have personally witnessed 2 miracles and know others that their prayers are answered quite often. Outside of that, if you look at the big bang theory it actually points to being creation. For something that is in motion has to be put in motion. This first beginning is what we call God. He has always existed and will always exist. When have we ever experienced anything that was created out of NOTHING. We cannot create new elements, humans, trees, birds, grass. EVRYTHING we do begins with SOMETHING that already existed. This beginning to EVERYTHING that we know today is what we call God.
  • Jesus is truly the Son of God. If you look into other religions they are mostly put together by a single person. For example, in Islam the word of God was given to muhammed. If you trust Muhammed then you can certainly believe this. However, if you read the bible and the Gospels specifically you are reading the testimony that is something fundamentally different from all other religions. Namely you have MULTIPLE testimonies of Jesus as he live, dies and was resurected. As a matter of fact Jesus never even wrote any of this, it came from others testifying about him. Have you ever considered why Peter denied Jesus BEFORE he died yet later gave his life for Jesus AFTER Jesus dies? As all of the Apostles did as well except for John and Judas. Who would you give your life up for? Would you give it up to some crackpot that preached to you daily for three years and then died and never saw him again? It is amazing to me that people today consider all religions the same, they are not. Christianity has a unique response that does not exist in other religions. I do not think we should criticize people of other religions, rather how many of these people really know all of these facts.
  • So once you believe in bullet 1 and bullet 2, then you have to ask yourself if there is a God and Jesus was the Son of God, then who would it make sense to believe? The Catholic Church was directly the result and authority of Jesus Christ himself to maintain the pastoral care of his flock until he returns. It was specifically given this charge to the end of this age. To me if you want to learn the best way to live, the Catholic Church has the answer for you.
My best friend is an atheist and I pray for his conversion all the time as i want nothing more for him to be with me in Heaven. He is actually a very pleasant and nice person. It is kind of ironic because i think if most Christians acted like him they would be better off. At the end of the day however, it is really up to us as God gives us free will and we have the right to reject him. Even worse than that, however, is that he will allow us to do so.

Very typical rant. As the post above said you can find reasonable responses from a Christian perspective. But since you do not apparantly have them right to hand I would suggest you stay away from these types of sites and avoid such discussions wherever you may find them. The danger is that these people prey on the unsophistaced and unlearned. Their target isn’t philosophers and mature Christians but those who are weak or untutored in philosophy and the intellectual grounds for their faith. Unfortunately, that is quite a number of people these days - especially among our college and university students.

I would suggest you start studying your Catholic Faith from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM

Next I would get two books by Dr. Edward Feser : " Aquinas " and " The Last Superstition. " ( In second book, skip pg 146 because there is material there which is suitable only for Gynecologists and may be an occasion of sin for others) The first book gives a good and rather clear explanation of the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas which will bolster your Faith. The second covers some of the same material but gives a good response to much of the Athiest argument. Both of them can be found in most good libraries or can be purchased for $15 - $17 each. 👍

Finally, you do not have to justify your faith to anyone; indeed the vast majority of non-believers will not agree to any or your arguments and will accuse you of being nothing another gullible Christian or worse. On the other hand your Faith is based on " converging and convincing " arguments as the Catechism explains. These arguments are clear and available to the most simple. You don’t have to be a genius to be justified in your faith. It came to you from God who cannot lie or decieve. Hang onto it. 👍

My advice is to spend more time reading the Catechism and Catholic apologetics and less time reading random atheist websites.

I agree with the others that there is too much to tackle in one thread, and most all of these things have been dealt with at one time or another.

I will say this. His writing is nicely done and basically inoffensive. He presents is position to each question that [bHE** asks himself in a succinct and logical way. Of course none of this makes him right. Also - I think there are aspects of his posting that make quite good sense…But delving into each is, as already mentioned by others, a thread all it’s own.
For example, he talks about a just God judging him on who he is as a person, not on whether he believes in God or not. Well…I will agree with this wholeheartedly…the Catechism even speaks of those who have never heard the Gospel and also the matter of “invincible ignorance”. But I will also suggest that his life choice to believe or not to believe is a part of who he is as a person and so that is a legitimate aspect of the whole person for God to make judgement on.

He says there is no more evidence for God than there is for Zeus. If I accept that as true, we can also say that there is no more evidence for “no god” than there is for Zeus. So the position one takes is then largely one based on faith. So this person - and Atheist is just as much a “person of faith” as the rest of us.

For myself - and I know that many people don’t care for this (Pascal’s wager) but If I’m going to take a chance…I’d prefer one with the potential for more than the grave and a face full of dirt.
That said of course, making that choice requires more than intellectual ascent. It requires life choices etc otherwise it is worthless.
This is another point on which I agree with the Atheist. If one is not willing to - or are unable to in some way - then they have to follow their conscience.

Sorry if the above is sort of jumbled up…Just the way my thoughts are flowing today…
But…
For myself, the more I believe and live, the more convinced I am of the reality of God.

Peace
James

The experiences of all people-atheists, believers, inbetweeners-or however else we might want to label ourselves- are predominately the same. We all love, work, laugh, cry, enjoy recreation and friends, appreciate beauty and pleasure, etc. The difference is that believers have an idea of where it all comes from, and have a definitive sense that the value of existence is more than subjectively arrived at, but rather our existence is given value and meaning, whether or not we may acknowledge it at any point in time, by the God who created it, more so yet by the love of the God who created it.

IMO humankind is lost until they’re found by this creator, a relationship with whom connects and unites us to the very foundations of this universe. IOW faith is the restoration of a practical, natural condition for man. IMO atheists can even possess it in a sort of primordial, vague, and unarticulated way-demonstrated by a general trust or hope that there’s an overall larger purpose to their efforts, to their lives, and often entertaining considerations about continued existence in some form after physical death. They may already acknowledge that the natural order of things is “larger” than themselves in several ways-that we don’t have full control over all that happens to us, that life has its own twists and turns that may lead to even more new experiences we don’t plan for. They just don’t put a name to this “reality”, or think we can know much, if anything, about it, and they would reject any of the attributes that religions may give it.

Faith problem?
GOD “IS TRUTH” AND CAN BE NOTHING LESS…

Matt. 12: 30 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

John 8:45-47 “But if I say the truth, you believe me not. Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me? He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God”
BY Richard Carrier
What is an Atheist?
An atheist is a person who does not believe that any gods exist
Why don’t you believe in God?
There is simply no more evidence for Jehovah than there is for Zeus .
The arguments by Atheist against the reality of God are without logic, honestly and ANY evidence

The Universe had to have a “First Cause,” which we chose to call “God.” Among the MANY BILLIONS of things in the Universe; only one; humanity can rationalize, love or hate. WHY?

Because to do so absolutely requires a mind, intellect, and a FREEWILL, which are permanently attached to our Souls. ALL of which like God Himself are “Spiritual things”. Quantify your “freewill” for example. Size, color, shape, weight? Can’t be done; yet it exist in humanity alone.
Don’t you want to go to heaven?
I do not believe there is a heaven
Such a position is egotistic at best. The fact that humanity ALONE can choose to love or hate MUST have both a cause and a reason. Life itself, indeed the Universe would have NO MEANING, no purpose for existence without humanity. NONE!

Humanity would have no cause to exist were it not God’s Will, God’s desire that we freely choose to Love Him, in return for our existence.

**Isa.43 Verses 7 and 21 **“every one who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." AND the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”
How can you turn your back on true happiness?
I cannot imagine being happier than I have been already. I live a very spiritual, fulfilling life,
“Spiritual” W/O God?? ALL of the above would be literally impossible EXCEPT for humanities EXCLUSIVE spiritual gifts which PROVE God’s existence.
How can you trust sinful humans, ignoring all the good god does?
It offends me that an invisible god is given credit for every good thing that happens in the world, while every evil is blamed on humanity. There is much evil in the world that is not the fault of human beings, such as ignorance and disease and droughts,
“Good” can only originate from God. There is no other plausible explanation. Evil is the result of humanities own choices. We can love or hate; do good or evil by using the spiritual gifts given to humanity alone. Natural disasters ARE permitted by God for TWO specific reasons. 1. As a warning to make amends to God whom we have abused and neglected; 2. As a punishment for the sins of many 3. Because we made Jesus suffer; we too must suffer with Christ

1Pet.4: 13 ” But rejoice in so far as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
If there is no god, then where do you think the universe came from?
I do not even know if the universe had a beginning
See here what I mean by a total lack of logic and evidence of their position. This is illogical in the extreme!
So why be moral?
I dislike the kind of people who hurt me or lie to me or who are insincere or inconsiderate
“Right; wrong, morals and morality” exist ONLY to enable humanity to freely choose God or Satan. Heaven or Hell

**Jerem. 21:8 **“And to this people thou shalt say: Thus saith the Lord: Behold I set before you the way of life, and the way of death”
What do you think happens when you die?
I see that the brain is what gives me existence, and I depend on its health for my ability to think and survive. When the brain dies, I die, and when the brain ceases to exist, so do I
NO! Not the “brain [a physical thing] BUT the SPIRITUAL things that allow us alone to emulate our God. A Mind, intellect, freewill and soul; which like God are immortal things that can’t die or be killed

[QUOTEWhat about all the people who experience god?
There are people in the world who experience the essence of Buddha, who remember past lives”
[/QUOTE]

Who choose to THINK that they do. Was Buddha’s birth prophesied many hundreds of years B4 his birth. Christ was! ABOUT 700 YEARS BEFORE CHRIST BIRTH.

Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
So what do you believe in?
I believe in many things. I believe in the potential of humanity, in the power of reason, in the comfort of love, and in the value of truth {AS I CHOOSE TO DEFINE IT}I believe that it is better to preach the gospel of “be good to your fellow man, and love each other as life itself,”
ALL of which are possible ONLY because a Good-God CREATED humanity in His image; with a mind, intellect, FREEWILL and soul for HIS possible Glory!

IF YOU DON’T CHOOSE TO STAY CLOSE TO GOD; DON’T EXPECT HIM TO STAY CLOSE TO YOU.
