All of Las Vegas’ parishes are, if I’m not mistaken, orthodox Catholic parishes, with perhaps the exception of Christ the King Catholic “Community,” where they don’t bother to schedule things like Confession, have chairs that don’t have kneelers, if I’m not mistaken, and where they did have and may still have a Dignity Chapter (gays lobbying the church to change its moral teaching).
We have at least 2 Byzantine Catholic parishes. One, Our Lady of Wisdom, is located on O’Bannon, west of Decatur and north of Sahara. My parish, which recently underwent renovation in order to make it look less “modern,” is Our Lady of Las Vegas. We are located on Alta Drive, between Rancho and Valley View. Our pastor and associate pastor are both orthodox, but our associate is from Africa, is difficult to understand, and is constantly nagging at us to sing (he breaks into song during his sermons, bless him, and doesn’t understand why most don’t join in). We do have altar girls, as do most parishes in the diocese, so if that’s a source of scandal for you, I don’t know what to tell you. None of the church’s are traditional in architecture, unfortunately, except for St. Joan of Arc, downtown. I’ve been there once, unquestionly orthodox, but not even slightly inspiring.
Guardian Angel Cathedral is just off the strip, run by the Viatorian priests. It is a modern A-Frame monstrosity, but I’ve never heard anyone propose women priests or any other heterodoxy while I was there. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is okay, but they can’t be bothered to put a crucifix near the altar. There is a depiction of our Risen Savior instead (I always think those should be near the entrance to the church and the crucifix in it’s proper place). St. John Neumann, Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint James the Greater are all new parishes, 2 without their sanctuaries built yet. St. James is a predom. African American parish, with a gospel choir. The Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer is located just off the south end of the Strip, in front of the Luxor. It, like the Cathedral, is mostly for tourists who need to meet their Sunday or Holy Day obligations. Saint Joseph Husband of Mary is a magnificent Spanish style church on west Sahara, with beautiful eastern-style mosaics fronting the interior of the church. Orthodox, esp. Father Bernie, who always has an excellent
homily that he unfortunately reads verbatim off a sheet of paper. He is a very scholarly man, though, and a compassionate confessor. You should know that our bishop has, to my knowledge, not yet established/permitted the Indult. Though I would not attend myself, I find this unfortunate, as one and possibly two schismatic SSPX “chapels” exist here. One is named “Our Lady of Victory” and the other is “Saint Joseph.” You’ll want to avoid those, as we are cautioned not to attend or support them in any material way. You should know that our parishes are huge (esp. St. Joseph Husband of Mary) and that regrettably there is a “get 'em in, get 'em out!” mindset, due to woefully poor parking. Beware also of the odd “Independent Catholic” or “American Catholic” or “Old Catholic” churches here, which just call themselves “Catholic.” One is St. Thomas (our legitimate parish is St. Thomas More, in Henderson), which meets in a strip mall, and St. Valentines, which meets in a hotel meeting room.
