When we are tempted to do wrong is it Satan tempting us or just some fallen angel or evil spirit? Do we know how many fallen angels there are? When a soul enters Hell do they become an evil spirit? Does Satan rule over the fallen angels and evil spirits? I know this is a lot of questions but I am try to get a clearer picture about the “other” side and how it is put together. Feel free to just point me in the direction of something to read that will answer some of my questions. Thanks!

Here is what the Catholic Encyclopedia says about demons (i.e. fallen angels). Here is what the Catechism says about the fall of the fallen angels.

Satan and the fallen angels do try to tempt us and lead us away from God. Of course, we are still responsible for our choice to sin. I’m not sure whether or not I’d say that all temptation has a demon as its source. Perhaps someone else could respond to that point.

We do not know how many fallen angels there are any more than we know how many angels there are.

I don’t believe the Church speaks to what people will be doing in hell (besides suffering eternal punishment). There is no indication that they will become “tormentors” or “tempters” of those on earth. Certainly, people do not change species when they die. Just as human beings don’t become angels in heaven but remain people, humans wouldn’t become demons either.

For more info on the Church’s teaching on hell, see the Catechism # 1033-1037.

Hope this helps!

Temptations come from several places. Sometimes we run across or are shown something by another person that will tempt us. Sometimes temptations rise from within, us caused by emotion or memory. Sometimes satan will introduce temptations, or just play upon the ones we are already experiencing.

In all these cases, we have the free will to either succumb or resist the temptation whatever it’s source. The sin is not in being tempted, but in how we respond.
Do we know how many fallen angels there are?
In Revelation 12, we read that satan, in his rebellion, “took a third of the stars” with him. This is commonly interpreted as a third of the heavenly hosts. We have no idea of the exact number, only that there are “multitudes” of the heavenly host.
When a soul enters Hell do they become an evil spirit?
No. Angels (including fallen ones) are of a purely spiritual nature. The nature of humans is both physical and spiritual. You might say they are the only two known species of rational beings. Angels are angels and humans are humans. We will remain so after death when, Scripture tells, us we will have glorified bodies after the Final Judgement.
Does Satan rule over the fallen angels and evil spirits?
Revelation 12 also calls the angels that fell with satan “his” angels, so I would say yes. Ditto for the lost souls who will spend eternity in the place reserved for him and his angels (Matthew 25:41)

You won’t know if you don’t ask. 🙂
