Ave Maria
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Sign of the Cross

In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

I Confess

Amen.

Angele Dei Prayer to One’s Guardian Angel

Angele Dei,
qui custos est mei,
Me tibi commissum pietate superna;
(Hac nocte, Hodie) illumina, custodi, rege, et guberna.
Amen.

Actus Fidei (Act of Faith)
Amen.

Actus Spei (Act of Hope)
Amen.

Actus Caritatis (Act of Love)
Domine Deus, amo te super omnia proximum meum propter te, quia tu es summum, infinitum, et perfectissimum bonum, omni dilectione dignum. In hac caritate vivere et mori statuo. Amen.

Doxologia Minor Glory Be

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Oratio Dominica The Lord’s Prayer
Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

Symbolum Apostolorum Apostles’ Creed

Amen.

I’ve been trying to teach myself Latin prayers and I’m struggling with a word from the Apostles Creed. Can someone tell me how to pronounce the word “eius”? Is it (AI-eee-oos)?

Also, from the Magnificat, I’m not sure about “efficiamur promissionibus” (eff-eee-chee-AH-moor pro-mees-eee-OH-nee-boos?) , “ecce ancilla” (ETCH-chay ahn-CHEE-la? ) and “tiavit” (tee-AH-veet?)

I’m also confused about when the letter “e” is pronounced “eh” and when it is “ay”. I always struggle with the hymn “Adeste Fideles” Is it (Ah-DES-tay Fee-DAY-less) ?

Any help from the Latin experts would be GREATLY appreciated. I wish there was a thread for Latin pronunciation… maybe I’ll start one someday!

God Bless,
Gary

eius is pronounced (ay-oos) ei is a dipthong

you are correct for the efficiamur promissionibus

ecce ancilla is (etche ahn chee la)

Adeste is properly (ah des te) and Fideles is (Fee De Less)

Remember that in Latin all vowels are round just like in Spanish and Italian. All consonants are hard except some minor linguistic changes for Ecclesial Latin where the c is a ch but can be a k sound and the g can be a dz sound. Also remember that there is no j in Latin so if you see a j it is pronounced like an i. Also it is not correct to say that the h is no pronounced rather it is like the Greek breath marks so it is a slight breath or h sound before the vowel. So Hodie is not pronounced odie but rather has a slight h before the o.

Neat, thanks! I’m trying to learn them all, but have only gotten the glory be and the hail mary down. I get it right some day!!!

:gopray2:
Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Iesu, exaudi me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me, et iube me venire ad te,
Amen

I orginally did not respond to this, since **mosher **took care of the questions, but I did want to note a bit of constructive criticism:

Those phrases are not found in the Magnificat (*tiavit is not even a word, but I presume you mean the latter syllables or nuntiavit). They appear in the Angelus. Both prayers are well worth learning.

A [thread=99745]short one[/thread] came and went just the other day… There have undoubtedly been others.

:gopray2:
Magnificat anima mea Dominum,
et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salvatore meo,
quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae.
timentibus eum.
Fecit potentiam in brachio suo,
dispersit superbos mente cordi sui;
deposuit potentes de sede
et exaltavit humiles;
esurientes implevit bonis
et divites dimisit inanes.
Suscepit Israel puerum suum,
recordatus misericordiae,
sicut locutus est ad patres nostros,
Abraham et semini eius in saecula.

Thanks for the link Marilena, I’m checking it out right now.

Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio,
contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.
Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:
tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,
qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo,
divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen.

For pronuciation purposes I think this this and this are pretty fair, I have actually burnt these prayers to a disc and listen to them on the way to work for practice.

:gopray2:
Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum
