This is going to be a longer post, because the situation covers two generations. You can’t understand how horrible the current situation is without understanding the past situation.

I have a sister who was abused sexually repeatedly by many different people while growing up. The first time she was raped, she was in foster care and was 6 years old. She was returned to her father’s care sometime after that - I was a baby, so I only know what I’ve heard and the timeline isn’t too clear. Then she was raped by boyfriends, and finally there is very strong evidence that she was raped by her father’s closest friend. Her father (our father, although I never lived with him like she did) has completely blamed the victim, and insisted that she apologize to his friend for the accusation. Only when he remarried and my stepmother told him to stop, did my father stop demanding an apology to his friend . My sister has told me how extremely hurt and betrayed she feels about this.

My sister followed the common pattern of people who have suffered serious abuse by forming relationships with abusive men, who seem to have radar for abused women. She became pregnant as a late teen and married the father, who left her - but there is some evidence that he may have abused his young daughter at some point while she was a toddler. My sister dated and lived with an extremely violent abuser after that, until my other sister was caring for the children, saw bruises in horrifying places, and followed the law by calling CPS. Thank heavens the oldest daughter was still only three or four years old - we had hope that she could still escape the “cyclical curse” of sexual abuse. My sister then married an older man who seemed lazy and a little radical fundamentalist Christian, but didn’t show signs of abuse; the only reason we had to suspect him was that he married my sister, and every other relationship she’d been in had been abusive. However, after 7 years or so of marriage, we hadn’t heard any evidence that he was harming anyone - so we thought the cycle was broken. I visited them in late August for the first time in years, and the family seemed great. Stressed by the recession, normal tension from a teen growing into an adult, but normal. I certainly didn’t get those “bad vibes”.

Now we don’t know about him anymore, but it doesn’t look good. The oldest daughter reported a rape by him last month, and her mom seems to be putting subtle pressure on her “not to lie” in front of other family - who knows what she is saying where we can’t hear them? I truly, truly hope and pray that there is more to the story, that it is not true - but I don’t believe it for a second. I am very scared that this amazing young woman was raped by her stepfather, and her mother, who has been through “blame the victim”, is falling back on treating her daughter the way that she herself was treated. Her mother has a history of lying to protect her outwardly perfect family, and I’m truly scared that she really hasn’t conquered that yet.

Please pray for a miracle. Pray that honesty, whatever the truth is, wins, and that this cycle of lies and abuse gets broken. The stepfather is in jail right now, presumably because of this. EVERYONE in this family is in need right now, no matter what happened.

Also, the children’s biological father is trying to get them removed from the home. It’s hard to tell if he knows about any of this, or just got lucky on his timing. At first I thought he was playing games, but now I’m wondering if it might be good for these children to get away from their mother for a while. I love her very dearly and nothing will change that, but it’s the 12-year-old girl, my niece, who still has a chance to be stong and break this cycle before another generation gets hurt, who is most vulnerable no matter what happened, and her brother, that are my first concern. There is also another daughter born after my sister married the stepfather who is six years old, so pray for her as well. I truly hope that her youth means she’s safe. After all, the stepdaughter wasn’t hurt (assuming she was hurt, which seems probable) until she was past puberty.

My other sister is first in line if their mother loses custody, but my husband and I are discussing if we could take them into our home if that doesn’t work out for any reason (unlikely - they would truly be ideal foster parents). Please pray that God moves us to make the right decision, so that we are ready if we are asked. I know that phone call can sometimes come out of the blue - this isn’t the first time we’ve been asked if we could take in someone in my family.

I wish there were something more I can do. I feel so distanced, like I’m watching a screenplay unfold. I thought our family was past this kind of horror story. I thought people had picked up the pieces and put their lives together.

I thought the children were safe now.

Our Father in Heaven, His Son and our Savior, and Holy Spirit who sanctifies, please please please bring your light into this suffering. Please free these children and their families from the bondage of sin’s consequences. Oh Lord, please help them.

It was so much easier to bear when I was a teenager myself and it was my siblings. Or maybe it just seems that way because it was so long ago.

I am so sorry to hear of your familys pain. I cant beleive that any man or woman would do such things to a child. I will pray for all of you. God Bless.

And grant wisdom to longingforlight and strengthen her family to be ready to be of service in Your name however that is; ease their emotional anguish and grant them peace. Amen

Is there any way to get the police and child protective services involved in this situation?

If the oldest daughter reported a rape, that is something you have to report.

Whoa - this is scary. Those kids need to get out of the house with that man. Your sister probably needs some deep counseling and if she has in any way covered up or facilitated the abuse of her kids, she has moved from being a victim to being a perpetrator and you need to protect her children from her as well. The cyclical nature of abuse never ceases to amaze me

Get your sister to a priest, preferably one who has some experience with delivery ministry. If you go to the Padre Pio deliverance center online (they are very legit, orthodox and loyal to the Holy See), there are some prayers for breaking generational bonds and curses.

I was under the assumptions the authorities were involved. I guess I didn’t read that right. If they are not, you can make an anonymous report to children’s protective services yourself. Just google either the city they are in or ask your local one how to do that.

The authorities are involved. The stepfather is in jail.

Believe me, if he is in the same household for any reason, someone will get involved - probably not me, as I am not directly involved in the situation at this point (my sister’s family hasn’t told me directly, they told another family member, although I’m going to call soon and give my sister a chance to tell me herself - I think she will, once we get a chance to talk). But whoever gets involved (probably our other sister) will have my support. I am very glad that I’m not having to deal with this alone.

Unfortunately, in my position, there is still an outside chance that something else is wrong and the girl did lie to get out of some other situation. She is now saying she lied. I don’t believe it, but I have no proof. I wish it were true, it would be so much better if this were teenage anti-stepfather frustration taking an inappropriate form, but I don’t believe it. But if this girl won’t stand up for herself, and if her mother (my sister) won’t stand up for her . . . I can’t barge in there and say this girl needs to leave the home on my own.

God, please help this girl speak the truth. No matter how hard it is for everyone to hear. She will be supported and loved.

If someone thinks differently, please - let me know what I can do. I agree that it will be best, regardless of what happens, if this girl and her stepfather are not in the same home - but I don’t have authority over the situation. I want her to be welcome in my home, but DH is still thinking it over. He doesn’t like changes, and this whole situation is so foreign to him. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.

I thought you said someone else was first pick for a foster home for this child if needed?

Anyway, the authorities there will have to sort out the truth. It does occur that teens lie or are encouraged to lie in custody battles. I agree though; the prayers will be for the truth to be revealed whatever it is…

Taking on a child who has been through something like this is a real commitment; a teenager can be quite challenging as she works through the trauma. And extended families can be difficult. So, I can understand your DH’s (dear husband? --seen this a lot, don’t know what it is) concern. Prayer, discernment, clear information about what is required should you take her on, and practical considerations, for example the effect on your own family, need to be weighed carefully before a commitment is made. I know that sounds dispassionate or uncaring but we are only human and our love must be tempered with realism and our priorities to our own families. That’s my two cents. Take it as a grain of salt.
Blessings.

I thought your other sister would be taking the child if that is needed; you guys would be second in line. If that is so, right now you can stay out of it. In fact, I think you should stay out of it until someone wants you in it more directly. You will only get conflicting messages anyway just like everyone over there and the distraction of all this emotional stuff will prevent you from being focussed on your own family (don’t know if you have kids or not). The authorities there will figure it all out or not… but you are right, it is out of your control.

Your DH (is that short for Dear Husband?) has a right to be concerned about involvement in terms of taking the child in if needed. This would be a very big commitment, emotionally and in terms of time. Be sure you have time, emotional energy, and a good knowledge of what would be required of you. Foster care people tend to make it sound easier than it is… Pray, discern, and listen to any common sense (name removed by moderator)ut from your DH and remember that unity with DH is more important than extended family issues (hope that statement doesn’t bristle you–don’t mean for it to. But when we marry our husbands, our allegiances become re-prioritized).
Blessings.

Bailey2 - great advice. I really appreciate it, it’s echoing what I’m thinking.

Who would be first in line / second in line isn’t set at this point, and shouldn’t be now that I’ve thought about it a bit more. My sister (let’s call her H.) was presenting it that way, and I swallowed it without thinking. But it’s not H’s decision to make, now that I think about it a bit more. I don’t have anything against H and her DH taking the children if that becomes necessary, but I want us to work together with the mother (whom I’ll call M) on this. Anyways, I’m going to talk to my sister a little bit more about this once my DH and I (yes, DH is Dear Husband) have figured out our position.

I have decided, though, that I’m going to call up my own foster parents to ask about legal and financial matters related to foster-parenting family (without telling them about the abuse situation - that’s not my job, they just need to know that there’s an outside chance that we could be asked to take on this role). There are other factors we might need to think about, like local schools and such. If the children cannot continue to be homeschooled due to legal reasons, the quality of the local public school could be a deciding factor. The public schools where H lives are horrible, but the ones near me are supposed to be “okay” - not great, but not terrible.

I’m also going to talk to a friend of mine who doesn’t know most of my family, so she can’t accidentally say something to the wrong people, and I’ll tell her the full story. She has foster care experience (adopted a foster child), and knows enough about my family background to really get the context of what is happening. Honestly, I don’t know a single foster parent who made things sound easy. When I talk to most foster parents, they talk about heartbreak and uncertainty about their children. I do think I have a big advantage as a foster parent because I am a foster child who had a good experience, though. I know what those relationships feel like from the other side, and I know intimately how at least one set of great foster parents handled their new family member when I joined their family.

I’m going to get myself a little more involved as a listening ear, as well. I’ll call up M and hear her side of things, and also keep open communication with my niece in case she needs to talk to an adult. Regardless of what happens to the children, that’s something I can do right now - and my relationships with everyone are such that I’m a safe person to take up this role. H really can’t fit it, since there is a bit of history with her and M - H is the one who called CPS on M with the abusive boyfriend about 9 or 10 years ago. M and H get along great now, but the history is still there.

The only advice I intend to give if asked is to pray and to be honest, and encourage everyone to be honest so the lies can stop. I can’t really get more specific, since I don’t 100% know what the truth is. Otherwise, I just want to listen and encourage everyone to be strong and do the right thing, and to know that I am there for them.

sounds like a plan
But remember, harmonious marriage comes first.
Glad I could be of some help
Blessings
