Family Home Evening

I was curious to see if anyone on here can give me a point in the right direction. The LDS has “family home evenings”( lds.org/topics/family-home-evening ). FHE is a pretty “canned” program. Is there anything comparable in the Catholic world that follows a similar model true to Holy Mother Church? If so, would you share a link or point me in the right direction? Feel free to share some of the things or ideas you may have done or tried with regards to family devotion/catechesis. I’m hoping to start a weekly family catechesis in our home. Our kids are finally becoming old enough to sit still and they are really responding positively to the advent wreath and calender this year, so I naturally want to continue after advent. The Apostolate for Family Consecration has a really nice Family Catechesis program that can be done at home or at the parish. A lot (if not all - I forget) of the materials are online. Here is the website: familyland.org/content/Content.aspx?CategoryID=742

I just want to chime in and say that FHE is a fantastic idea and I wish that more people of every faith or non-faith implemented it. If there’s one thing that the Mormons got right that’s it.

I plan on doing it with my future children as well, although, obviously there won’t be scripture or bible lessons. It’s still important that families make sure that no matter how busy they are that they are spending quality time together.

If you can find some materials to get started, you may find that your kids take an interest and step up to the plate to help guide how the nights go.

We never used a specific program, but have always had evening prayers and regular family time that sometimes was centered around lessons of a sort, sometimes was simply family game time and the like.

We homeschooled CCD for several years and during that time used the lessons in the Faith and Life series as part of our “family CCD.” We also did quite a bit of read-aloud and then talked about the books - Saints lives, age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction, etc.

I suggest you use the liturgical calendar to guide you. After Advent you have the weeks of Christmas and Epiphany with Lent and Easter following soon after. During Ordinary time there are also plenty of Saint’s days and other markers.
