I have a difficult time meeting both work and home obligations some of the time. I am not sure how to handle this. Any advice?

Without a family fortune, everyone I know needs a job in order to meet family obligations (food, housing, clothing…)

You work FOR your family, correct?
Unless you can find another job that better suits your family obligations, it may be just worthwhile to consider making compromises that meet both needs.

What exactly is the conflict? 🤷

Mainly its about scheduling.
Can your family be a little more flexible? Especially since you’re providing the financial means for their survival…??? 🤷

I sympathize… we have a hectic scheduled family life also. My husband and I both work… he works late regularly and travels often, we eat late as a family, or kids tend to stay up later than “normal”. Who cares? We do what works for US!

I know there are families here on these boards who work split shifts (mom works during the day, dad works at night, or vice versa) - so things can get REALLY complicated.

Pray together that things will even out in time. In the meantime, compromise and find a solution that works to the benefit of the ENTIRE family.

Could you give me some more info about your family? I’d be glad to offer any help I can. I’ve been a working mom for 11 years. It is tough sometimes!

Or, on the other side ftom Em_in_FL’s comment… can you shift your hours a bit? Most jobs these days don’t really have to be done during a defined set of hours at one time of day. My DH could literally do his job at sunrise or midnight. His employer is understanding of family obligations and allows him some flexibility. As long as he puts in his 40 hours for the week, they don’t get too fussed if he’s late one morning or leaves early one afternoon. Like last week, we were dealing with getting his motorcycle serviced, insured, smogged, titled, and registered, because he had just bought a used one after his previous one was stolen. (It’s not just a toy for him, he rides to work everyday.) He went to work close to lunch time a couple days last week because he had to go to the MVD office. He let his boss know where he was and why, and his work got done, so no one cared. He also has been late for “breakfast with Dad” events at school, or left early for sports, school, or church events. Most of the time, though, he is the first one in the office, and he works his butt off. So I am sure that influences their tolerance of the few times he’s late or leaves early.

He has basically designed his work day the way he wants it. He leaves our house by 6:30 a.m. nearly every morning. He commutes 30 miles, and by leaving that early, he gets to work fast. He’s normally there by 7:00 a.m. He usually works until about 3:00 p.m., then goes to work out in the on-site gym. About 4:00 p.m., he checks back in at his desk to make sure there is nothing else that needs his attention for the day. Usually he can leave then, and is home before 5:00 p.m. Sometimes, there is something there to deal with, so he gets home a bit later. But he chooses to do that, in order to have more family time at the end of the day. He could go in to work as late as 9:00 a.m. if he chose, he would just have to stay later.

Would anything like that be possible for you?
