Hi,

Unfortunately both myself amd my wife weren’t brought up to pray with our families as children. I am wondering how I can integrate fanily prayer and bible study into daily family life as a parent.

I am particularly interested to know of people’s views and experiences of popular children’s prayers and catholic bibles, and how they structure prayer into the family’s day.

Many thanks in anticipation,

DD

Wish I could help. But I will give you the little I could do. My husband was not raised Catholic or on his knees praying the rosary every night like my family.

He would tell me how there were many ways to get to Detroit and he chose to take 75. Which meant he was going straight to God.
So I let it go but decided after my grandmother died that I would pray the rosary every night with the kids. My husband would always go to bed at 9:00 and so we would pray. During Lent I would take them to Stations and during the week I would read The Life of Jesus Christ by Katherine Emerich the 4th book about the Passion. When my older children went to public school I would use Father Hardon’s catechism to teach them out of. He would be in the living room always hearing us.
Now I can’t say he ever changed much on praying as a family other than grace and attending Sunday Mass but by the kids always asking Saint Anthony for things. SLowly he came around on the Saints and Mary. He makes sure everyday I include his intentions in my daily Mass. Hope this was some help.

Many thanks Toni for your reply, I really admire your dedication to setting a good example to your kids, I will pray for your family. I would be very happy to have my family have half the catechism you have given yours!

Have you tried planting the green scapular in your husbands armchair and the praying for an increase in his Faith in the Catholic Church? …

I read the day’s readings and talk about the saints who have feast days that day with the kiddos in between the many other books we read each day and at night we pray together as a family in the bedtime routine.

The little one says the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep prayer, then we each (including Little One) pray for specific intentions. Any time the little one says something off-the-wall, I turn it into an appropriate prayer. DH and I also pray for our intentions at this time.

It is not so ominous, imho, to have the study and the prayer time separated. It works in our day…

Hello!

Currently we are doing something with our children (10,8,4 &1) after dinner.

We are going through The Apostolate’s Family Catechism by Father Lovasik thru Catholic Family Land. It’s wonderful! Truly a blessing for us. Check out www.familyland.org for an array of items that are so faithful to the Magisterium.

We try to use every moment as a potential for family prayer and Bible study. If my daughter (4) gets really frustrated about something or wants something really bad, we encourage her to pray about it. Sometimes when we are just driving down the road we will talk about God and nature. If we are going on a long trip, we will start our trip off with a prayer for safety. At dinner time, we always pray. If she is up to it, we will even let her lead the prayer. She doesn’t always get it right because she is only 4 but it makes her feel like she is a part of it and not just a bystander. My husband gave her a little Bible that he had when he was a kid and she will occasionally bring it to us and ask us to read from it. We want her to learn about prayer and the Bible but we want her to internalize it so we try to incorporate it as part of our everyday life. We want to emphasize the importance of mass but we also want to empahsize how important it is to live a life of prayer on a daily basis. It is not unusual for my husband and I to discuss the sacraments or other religious doctrine as part of our every day discussion. Some people talk about the weather, we talk about religion and the teachings of the church. Sometimes we have formal lessons but most of the time it is just part of normal life. I am pretty pleased because she will ask us to pray a family rosary from time to time.
