Family Radio.. No Miracles?

Recently I was scanning my radio, and tuned briefly to Family Radio ( bible Christians…) The call in show, Open Forums was on. A caller asked the host, " brother " camping ( sp?) about miracles. The host said that miracles stopped after the new testament era, and that the only miracle today is being " born again " I found it interesting that any mortal, whether or not they use the bible to justify, would DARE announce a limit on what God ALMIGHTY can or will do. The unmitigated brazenness was a jawdropper.

My husband CANNOT STAND “BROTHER CAMPING”!!! (LOL)…Its a dislike which is a holdover from his Baptist and later SDA days…Camping is notoriously anti a lot of the beliefs many bornagains have, he is an amillenial Presbyterian, ftr. I believe his theology is that of a dispensationalist, which means he believes God works in different “dispensations”. To him, we are no longer in the age of prophecy or miracles, but the age of grace.

Just turning the radio dial in the car drives hubby bonkers if Camping’s voice comes on. LOL!

BTW Camping is very anti-Catholic as well as anti-Pentecostal, anti-SDA, anti-a lot of things. My husband went from Baptist to SDA to Jewish, and I doubt he was ever in ANY religion Camping would have approved of.

I listen to that station for the music (good Christian music, and Bible quizzes), and turn it off when Camping comes on. He is heretical in his thinking (even from a Protestant perspective). He is a believer in the end times being around the corner and thinks he has pegged the date from scripture (notwithstanding that scripture makes it clear we won’t know the time or date) and believes the “church age” has ended.

are you surprise? anyone can pick up a Bible and claim to have true enterpretation. who is to say anything against?

He holds an “Open Forum”, open to every point of view except those that contradict him, which is almost everyone. He believes that it’s not OK to go to church at all anymore and he is a cessationist (someone who sees miracles and Gifts of the Spirit as merely means for introducing the so-called Church Age). Camping has a way of looking like a regular mainline-to-conservative Protestant but then step-by-step introducing his odd ideas with a dogmatic firm voice until callers start sounding unsure of themselves. He runs Family Radio. Most who listen to the station don’t know anything about him. He says only 144,000 people will be raptured and the rest of the real Christians (whom he considers a tiny number but more than 144,000) will pass through a tribulation, shaking many loose from their faith.

I remember him saying on the air, years ago, that a woman must stay with her husband out of obedience, even if he physically abuses her. That was really when he lost all credibility with me.

That is just such a wrong and indefensible thing to say. How can a person claim to minister for God and then tell a woman to submit to the dehumanization and outright danger of domestic abuse?

Even the Catholic Church, while utterly opposed to divorce, says that it is sometimes prudent for a person to leave an abusive spouse, especially when there is a danger of life or children are endangered.

As Sepharad observed, such people deserve no credibility.

I used to listen to Camping on FR regularly years ago during my confused protestant days. I even sent him money from time to time. The programming on FR is mostly pretty good, but Bro Camping is off the deep end, I’m afraid.

I have no further interest in that stuff… it is boring and small. to tell truth I’m surprised Bro Camping is still alive. Last photo I saw of him he looked very cadaverish, and that was at least 20 years ago. would not be suurprised to find out they are running old recordings of his sermons and call-in shows.

He may have said it other times too, but this was in the early 1980s, on Family Radio…a woman called in to say she was a Christian, and her husband physically abused her. She wanted to know what to do.

Camping replied that she must stay with her husband in view of Ephesians 5…that she was to “submit” to him and “obey” him, regardless.

With people turning on radios and hearing that program we have a lot of damage control to do. I spend a significant chunk of my social time explaining that that isn’t what we think.
Too bad getting on-air is so expensive. We could easily get the attention off people like that if we had enough money.

I went to Google and did a search on Camping, just out of curiosity. I have not followed his career since the late 1980s, and I found out that he left his denomination in 1988…also, a number of sites online, run by Christians, are saying he is now a cultist, or whatever.

That position is called cessationism.​

I don’t think it’s brazen - no more so than the shared Christian position that revelation ended with the death of the last Apostle; that could be seen as limiting God’s freedom in the same way

Harold Camping is one man I CANNOT listen to, and I listen to Family Radio all the time for the music. Excluding his VERY strange beliefs, the way he behaves to callers is unacceptable.

There are many ravenous wolves out there that would destroy the faith of the weak ones and many of them deny that miracles happen today. So where does that leave a new believer - in a quandary, a maze of confusion - the devil is a master of confusion.
These “teachers” may have some personal issues with the church, like Luther or modern day John MacArthur or Harold Camping - they hate the church of their youth and don’t mind passing on their personal prejudices to others and tainting their faith.

I’ve been listening to Harold Camping for a few years now – although I don’t know why. He is brilliant in some ways, but in others, well to be charitable he’s a bit eccentric.

He ascribes to the double pre-destination view of salvation. In otherwords, our salvation was determined before the foundation of the world. Our fate, either salvation or damnation is already decided and we, according to Camping have no choice in the matter. No matter what we do, our fate has been sealed before we were even born.

Now, to complicate matters further, he’s predicted that May 21, 2011 is the day of judgement. He claims this is based on biblical evidence (Camping uses some pretty fancy math, adding numbers and dates togther – something I have a hard time following) to arrive at that precise date.

He claims that God has revealed this information to the true believers so that we can be prepared and evangelize the world so that many can be saved.

Now here’s the problem. If we are unable to change our destiny seeing that we are predestined to either salvation or damnation (Harold Camping does not believe in a literal hell) then of what possible value is there in knowing when the day of judgement will be? He’s never offered a really convincing argument on that one.
