Neil Simon’s plays were mainly good clean fun comedies or dramatic comedies: The Odd Couple, Plaza Suite, The Out of Towners, The Sunshine Boys, Come Blow Your Horn, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and so on. Very New Yorkish and very Jewish, but able to be enjoyed by all. Rest in peace.

I was surprised by how few of his works I recognise… only really seen Murder by Death and his adaptation for Sweet Charity, which was enjoyable. I’ve got a feeling I could have seen some of those you listed, too, but I really can’t say for sure.

A brilliant writer. I’d recommend his autobiography.

I love the Odd Couple (the play and the TV series)

Eternal rest grant unto him, Oh Lord…

wow that hasn’t been in the news here.

He was awesome.

I saw the movie, the one with Jack Lemmon. To me, it was remarkably annoying. It was like nails on a chalkboard. How can characters be so annoyingly neurotic?

Is the play like the movie?

I think that was the point. The characters were supposed to be neurotic, annoyingly so.

I suppose that I eventually figured that out as the movie went on, but I still don’t understand the appeal of it. I think it was just not my taste. Maybe something else from him is different than that?

All I can think of is Richard Dreyfuss saying in staccato-like fashion ‘I don’t - like - the panties - drying - on -the rod!’

The Odd Couple is so good, and Star Spangled Girl was the first play that ever made me laugh out loud when I read it.

The “Good Bye Girl” is in my top 10 favorite films.
