I am a big time fantasy nerd, I read the Hobbit as a child and was instantly hooked, I then read some of LOTR, then became interested in Grimdark fantasy such as A Song of Ice and Fire and The Blade Itself, but now as a Christian I see those books as inappropriate, so I started reading LOTR again. Other than Tolkein and Lewis, what other fantasy books are appropriate for Christan/Catholic readers?

Have you tried doing a search on Noblebright reading lists? It’s pretty much the opposite of Grimdark.

Two of the fantasy works that heavily influenced both C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were The Princess and the Goblin and its sequel, The Princess and Curdie; both by George MacDonald. I personally quite enjoyed them, especially The Princess and Curdie. MacDonald’s other major work of fantasy is Phantastes, which I have not yet read.

Here’s a good quote from Wikipedia:
C. S. Lewis wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his “master”: “Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later”, said Lewis, “I knew that I had crossed a great frontier.” G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had “made a difference to my whole existence”.

King Arthur and his Knights
Enders game (and others in the series)
The Wizard of Oz series
Black Beauty
Charlotte’s Web
James and the Giant Peach
Charlie and the Giant Peach
The Time Machine (HG Wells)
Beowulf
