God is kind and generous. For a soul who is willing to suffer a little by way of crucifying the flesh in a fast as an act of self-giving by which their intent is to save souls then God will do great things and sustain the soul in the fast to such a point where they do ask ‘My Jesus, I am not suffering unduly here yet the fast is severe so how can this be fasting anymore?’ The soul would feel the enormity of the fast were it to step one inch away from Jesus because it is Jesus who sustains them. After a while, we ask ouselves: Is this really fasting or is this just normal?.
The flesh is subject to the spirit and the spirit is subject to God, move one inch out of this chain and the fast will fall. The body therefore is subdued and biologically adapts to sustain the fast, but the will is what drives the fast and the will, weak as it is, is sustained in Jesus and by Jesus and through Jesus.
This is not to say that the soul who fasts does not face trials and sufferings because the interior life with Jesus will develop as the fast and prayer develops as God wills it and therefore suffering comes in different ways. However it must not ever be said that being drawn close to Jesus causes suffering, because there are many in the world who suffer greatly and do not know Jesus nor love Him at all. Rather the soul who believes in and loves and knows Jesus suffers in Him and their suffering offered to Him, by His grace and will, transforms and recreates them and the world and they are upheld in Him being intimately close.
Each man has a cross, but not all men love it nor seek it and embrace it for love of God and each other.
Simply put, fasting is an expression of love and Love Who is Christ Jesus upholds love in men.
