I don’t quite recall where I’ve heard this, but just wanted to see if someone can verify it.
Is a Catholic who prayerfully fasts for spiritual reasons allowed to fast on Sundays or should that be reserved for the other days of the week?
I’m not speaking of the mandatory 1 hour fast before Mass and the reception of The Eucharist. If I’m not mistaken, I believe the argument the person referenced was the passage in the Bible where Jesus explains the reason for His apostles not fasting was that He was still with them, and when we receive the Eucharist, He is with us. They also said this is why we don’t include Sundays in our 40 days of Lent.

Q: Why are Sundays excluded from the reckoning of the forty days?
A: Because Sunday is the day on which Christ arose, making it an inappropriate day to fast and mourn our sins. On Sunday we must celebrate Christ’s resurrection for our salvation. It is Friday on which we commemorate his death for our sins. The Sundays of the year are days of celebration and the Fridays of the year are days of penance.
