I’m a teenager, who was wondering if snacks are permitted during Ash Wednesday and Good Friday? I am not of age to fast, yet, but will be when I turn 18. I know you cannot eat two meals that equal one full meal, but I am not sure if you are allowed to eat between meals (i.e. a snack).

No—no snacks allowed, but you can drink liquid—like milk or juices which can help with light-headedness ( have that problem)

Thanks, that’s what I figured. It’s just the whole “two meals that do not equal a full meal” gets me confused sometimes.

Also, if you DO suffer from lightheadedness, fatigue, or any other kind of impairment, you should talk to your Priest, Spiritual Director, and/or Physician. It is OK to be excused from fasting if you have very real physical problems with it.

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. They need to be treated with respect, and that includes when fasting.

I am age 63, and am not REQUIRED to fast. But I fast on one meal a day (only, no snacks) if I have a weekday off from work. Staying at home and spoiling the cats is not really fatigueing work. On days when I work, I am content with dinner and supper.

BUT, I only fast with my Physician’s permission, and she has set strict guidelines to be followed.

Yeah the “two meals that don’t equal one full meal” thing used to get me in a moral bind. But all I do is have a very light mid-day lunch (a boiled egg,or a piece of toast or a pop tart—whatever but small) and then for supper have a HALF meal, like two sides, such as a half cup of beans and half cup of spanish rice and a very large iced tea ( I need to fool my stomach with liquid).
