.

Our Lady of Medjugorje asked for fasting on Fridays. And then later on Wednesdays and Fridays.
It could be -no television. No alcohol. No sweets or chocolate. Nothing with sugar.

It could be, eat a little less.

It could be not reading books that are not catholic spiritual reading. No newspaper. No facebook or emailing or twitter. No smoking .

It could be bread and water only.

It could be skipping a breakfast or supper or lunch the odd day (not all in one day)

It could be no meat. Replace it with fish, eggs, beans, cheese (a vegetarian fast)

It should not be something that effects your job or health or obligations. So you know best when and how much. Eg. I did a fast on Saturday last week (I had breakfast and lunch though, because I needed energy for farming, then did not eat or drink until the next day, sort of 10am to 10am the next day type of fast.

I tried the bread and water fast -for some reason the bread made me dizzy.

I’ve tried the water fast -but drinking water makes me hungrier,
I found a 10am to 10am fast easier, because I had enough food in the morning to give me energy.

For a while I tried just having a porridge for breakfast (smaller breakfast for a fast), and having nothing for my early 10mins break at work, but from my work lunch and onwards I did not fast. So it was a 6 day a week fast with a small breakfast no lunch. It made me feel kind of down though at times, it’s hard to look at the others eating lunches at work while fasting -and they notice you (so I’ve gone back to the Saturday 24 hr 10am to 10am fast maybe for now, I have to see how it goes!)

If I’m driving though I need to eat and would not fast at all, I get sleepy and drowsy, it does not help my eyesight vision

I’m not sure if it suited me to fast on work days Monday to Friday -as I need my brain and energy to be good for work, and I eat with the staff at work (to be sociable and not to let people know I am fasting, and because I really need to have my energy to drive and work Monday to Friday).

This is not boasting, I kind of need grace from fasting (although I gave it up for a long while) -just trying to help someone who is thinking about fasting,
You have to be practical and be willing to not fast, and be easier on yourself when necessary
But also maybe learn what are you able to offer in a fast and when it suits you best.

It has to be done with love of God, and faith (thanking God that the miracle
you asked for is granted or is on the way believing 100% and not even thinking about the opposite happening)

It can be any day or time or length or as little or big as you want, concerning food or non food items. Whatever suits you as a person and you with your job and obligations (which do
come first in God’s order of priority). It’s not legalistic, you do not have to do it, it’s an act of free will to gain the graces that God gives through fasting, there are GREAT graces from it

One of the best fasts I did for a few months was: (not to do permanently now, just for a number of days, or week)

I only read books or Internet if it was catholic reading
Only listen to music if it was christian music
Only watched tv is it was christian
As a musician I only played christian music for a while as my hobby.

I found it purged me of desires and habits in these areas that were not of God.

I was able to give up listening to modern music afterwards (all the unchristian lyric music)
Able to give up watching the rubbish on tv and radio (that is unchristian)
And fell in love with reading catholic books. I am unable to get ANY enjoyment out of reading other books now. At all. And this is for my good. Catholic books and lives of the saints are POWERFUL. They teach EVERYTHING. There’s always MORE to learn about EVERYTHING. Now I generally LOVE listening to christian music, and cannot completely go back to even modern music that is ok.

It helped me give up worldly hobbies.
Hobbies are not bad there okay and we need them, just that this helped me turn to catholic reading/ music

I am an artist and musician.
For a while and different times I fasted from these hobbies that I love.

I would not recommend this permanently. Just once for a few days or week to give you God’s perspective.

I returned to these hobbies REALLY appreciating them as God’s
Gifts to Me. To use for Him, to bring people to Him. And not for me.
I honestly prefer playing christian music in church now. (But I would play other music with decent lyrics -that’s pleasing to God too, music is for others!)
And my art totally turned in perspective: I drew a portrait for people at work when they retired and went towards putting little religious symbols in the portraits like patron saints, rosary beads,
Being asked to paint a patron saint on a wall mural!
(I appreciated my talents at art in any form, but also at being able to use directly for God like that)

I would not recommend a fast from water. Not good for the kidneys, or back/ hips/ joints (these give you back aches if they do not receive water).

Always drink as much water as you need. And break the fast whenever you need to.
