Is there any wrong or right reasons for fasting? Is it ok to fast for penance, devotion, or prayer intercessions?

Yes.

Wrong reasons for fasting would be pride and deliberately inflicting self-harm.

The right reason for fasting would be to DENY ourselves something that we REALLY REALLY want therefore denying our flesh (desires) in order to increase our spirituality and become closer to Jesus.

There is also nothing wrong with dieting for health because most Americans are over-weight and obese and need to have a healthier diet.

Also remember that you can fast from things beside food such as

Soap Operas on TV.
Sitcomes on TV.
Gambling.
etc.

Fasting, along with prayer, is a powerful tool. It also helps us to focus on the Lord more, rather than on what our bodies want.

time spent on the computer…

One of my favorite Saints St. John Vianney prayed and fasted for his parish–an indifferent one, at best. When he wanted more results, he began to deny himself some sleep. His whole town changed!!!

I have thought if he could do that for his parish, couldn’t I do that for my family?

However, I find fasting very challenging. I guess it is best to start slow.
