What are y’alls favorite foods to indulge in, and favorite traditions? My parish has a Mardi Gras party the Saturday before, and there’s kings cake, all the gumbo, rice and beans you can eat, live music, and poker with peppermints. I’m the only teenager who shows up every year, but I don’t mind hanging out with the 70’s plus club. It’s good, clean fun, and I look forward to it every year

My family always fixes a big breakfast dinner. Pancakes, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, etc. All for dinner. The problem comes when there is left-over bacon on Ash Wednesday.

My family is all redneck and backwoods, so my not- Catholic relatives are appalled at the mere thought of not having meat for a day 😂

Mostly my banana walnut pancakes.

None. We Hispanics don’t do that. But the parish staff is gathering for a big luncheon to nail down the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter schedules.

That could be a hassle. Easter keeps everyone who has anything to do with the liturgy super busy.

I’m sorry to say that after 3 1/2 years in New Mexico I still don’t cook my own New Mexican food 😱

I need to write that down on the calendar. Make it a March project, “Cook New Mexican food”.

It’s pretty inexpensive and simple, actually. You can make a huge crock pot of posole that will last a week.
Same with a big green chile chicken enchilada casserole.
Keep pintos int he fridge, along with chopped green chile, and a pitcher of red chile sauce, and you can top eggs or anythign rather easily.

In our household we don’t have any specific traditions. We just have a good meal like any other day. If I have anything that I won’t be eating during Lent, I find a way to incorporate it into the meal in order to use it up. But we don’t buy any particular foods to consume that day.

Sorry I don’t understand. What’s “left-over bacon”? 😉
