Why do we call priests ‘father’ when Jesus said,

‘Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven’ (Matt 23:9)

Just a question … what do you think Jesus called His Foster Father? I would guess that He called him papa or father. I doubt seriously that he would have called him Joseph!

And how do you refer to your biological father? I venture a guess that you have refered to your father as father more than once in your life time, or perhaps called him father when addressing him.

I know that there are more theological reasons for why we call priests father…and I know that others will answer.

The problem with your question is that you have taken one scripture - part of one scripture out of context. Go and read more.

To annoy fundamentalists?

DEESYPAL,
I looked in your profile and I noticed you said you were Catholic. Reading the Catholic Answers Track “Call No Man Father” would probably help you understand. It can be found by clicking here

Well said!👍

So what do fundies call their fathers? Why ‘FATHER’ of course!
  1. Founding fathers of the US?
  2. Father in their family? (i.e. dads)
  3. Etc…
What Jesus meant in context was to call only one God Father since there is but one God. It is OK to use the word ‘father’ for other uses.

This whole topic is just a ploy by Satan and his anti-Catholic followers to missguide and spew out lies about Christs body, His Catholic Church.

‘To annoy fundamentalists?’

LOL! good one.

part of the answer is found in what folks have posted already - you DO call your biological father ‘father’. Jesus didn’t intend for us to delete the word from our vocabulary.

the thing He was addressing was that the pharisees were calling abraham their father - and therefore saying that they didn’t have to listen to Jesus. Jesus made it clear that we shouldn’t rely on being sons of ANYONE except God for our salvation. being sons of abraham won’t save you, in other words.

believe it or not, this was THE CHIEF problem i had when i became catholic. it didn’t prevent me from becoming catholic, as i was sure the church had a good answer. i never actually heard the church tell its answer, though, because by the time i got around to asking, i’d already figured it out from context clues in scripture.

thanks for asking! please don’t hesitate to ask these questions, even if other posters say things like ‘go read your Bible’ or ‘go read the catechism’ and don’t bother answering your question - that’s actually what we ARE here for. 😉

Hmmm, not sure where I saw it, but it was in a Pauline letter, I think; and Paul said something along the line of being ‘their’ (whoever he was addressing in said letter) father in Christ.
If I find the verse, I’ll post it.

Another factor that places Jesus’s words in context:

Caesar was called “Papa” (Father) and demanded worship as a God.

“Call no man Father, for you have only one Father who is in Heaven.” makes a little more sense.

Actually since Jesus never called Mary “mother” (he called her woman) I’m sure he never called Joseph “father” either.

you’re SURE He never called him ‘father’??

that’s pretty strong, based on silence.

and we don’t know that Jesus NEVER called mary ‘mother’. the ‘woman’ bit is a huge deal having to do with a reference to eve.

you don’t really think that Jesus would disrespect His parents, do you? it IS, after all, one of the ten commandments. not likely He’d break one of them by showing disrespect to His mom and dad (even if the dad was not biological).

Well, Jesus I guess did disrespect his parents. He called Mary woman instead of mother in the bible. Maybe it’s because he was concieved of the holy spirit and Mary was just the housing for him. She has no biological tie to him. Jesus was perfect whereas Mary was not so there isn’t much he got from her. She was just the way he got into the world.

Indeed. Are you saying Jesus’ biological, physical body just came into existence in Mary’s womb out of nothing?

If that is the case, then why be born of a woman? Why use Mary as a “vehicle” if Jesus’ physical body can just be made to appear out of nothing.

Well He is God. I’m sure He can do a lot of things that we don’t understand, and do them for reasons we don’t understand. I’m sure if he just popped into being a full grown man one day that would be a little alarming. I mean, Jesus did make the world and the universe out of nothing, didn’t He?

He can.

But when He acts, it is for a good reason. So it is highly unlikely for God to simply pop Jesus, body and soul, out of nothing, into Mary’s womb without any reason whatsoever, when He can just as easily do the same without Mary.

I do believe God does not do something which is superfluous and unnecessary.

So then Mary is a part of Jesus? God, through some holy sperm, impregnated Mary so that Jesus is the child of Mary and God, infused with both of them? Does it make any sense for Jesus to be made up of anything biological of a sinful human being?

Jesus needed to be born of a woman to assume his human nature. Mary supplied his human nature. Jesus is the Child of Mary his mother and God the Father. And, of course, we believe that Mary was “ever sinless” because of her special role as the *theotokas, *the Mother of God (since Jesus was God and she was his mother, she is the Mother of God).

She was a human being, just like anyone else, and there is no scripture to support her being sinless. There is scripture that supports her herself claiming she needed a savior and scripture talking about her making a sacrifice to cleanse herself, which would mean she was a sinner. Scripture says that all have sinned and come short of the glory god, for none are righteous, no not one. It doesn’t say that Mary was an exclusion to that. Explain the verses in romans and why they say everyone sinned if Mary supposedly never did?

Jesus calls her woman to point back to genesis, she is the woman that God was going to put emnity between her and the devil between her seed and his seed. She is the foretold prophecy and Jesus is the seed that will crush the head of satan.Mary is not being disrespected, your evaluation sounds like God just used her:eek: Think about it,she was chosen to be His mom and she accepted Gods will.God Bless

Here’s what Jesus had to say about his mother and his brethren and if any were held higher than the other in Matthew 12:

47Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
48But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
49And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
50For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

He says that whoever does the will of God His Father that they are all the same, his brother in God, sister in God, or mother. Mary is said to be the same as anyone else according to Jesus.

And here is what Jesus said when a woman tried to exalt Mary in Luke 11:

27And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
28But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

He didn’t agree with the woman. He said “rather, blessed is the person that hears God’s word and keeps it.” He never said, “yes, she is blessed.” He said, “no, blessed is someone who hears my father’s words and keeps them.” Everyone is equal to Mary, Jesus said so himself.
